The Princess Who Wasn't

Chapter 8: Cookies!

After her shower Merilla put on her emerald green pajamas that she had gotten in her bag of clothes and pilled her red curls into a pony tail on the very top of her head. Then she sat down cross legged on her bed with the containers in front of her. Opening the pizza box first she looked at it in surprise. This didn’t look like any of the pizza’s she had pulled out of the dumpster and she wasn’t sure what everything on it was.

The was a lot of cheese and some pineapple, but the rest of it was unnamable to her. Little black rings, long red slices of something, and little gray rounded rectangles that smelled very salty. Regardless of not knowing what everything was on the pizza she was still going to eat it. She would never give up food after going hungry so often in her short life.

Picking up a small piece so she wouldn’t over do the first taste of it Merilla took a small bite. She was surprised by how much flavor there was just in that one bite. Savory, salty, and a small amount of sweetness was in every bite. She finished the small piece and ate a bigger one before opening one of the smaller boxes. One of them held cheesy bread like she had thought and she ate 2 pieces, but the other held something she was beyond excited for, she had never had it before but had seen them and smelled the delish aroma of them. They must have been left on accident because, deal or no deal, there is no way anyone in the town would have left cookies for her to eat.

They looked delish and even more tasty sitting in front of her than they ever had when she saw them beforehand. She snatched one out of the box and quickly chewed it up and swallowed it. It was delicious, even if it did make her teeth hurt a little and saliva fill up her mouth. The second cookie she ate a lot more slowly. She held it in her hand and took bite after tantalizing bite, making sure to chew and taste every bit of cookie and chocolate. It was the most positive feeling she had every felt and while eating it she had a genuine smile on her face.

Even though Merilla wanted to finish her entire box of cookies she wanted to save some for later because she wasn’t sure she would ever get another cookie much less a whole box. So, instead of eating anything more she put her pizza, cheesy bread, cookies, and the chicken wings she hadn’t even touched yet on the small dresser before crawling into bed, covering up, and falling asleep.
