Chapter 3 — The First Alpha

Elena couldn't move.
The stranger's words echoed in her mind.
The First Alpha has awakened.
“What does that mean?” she asked.
The stranger smiled.
“You'll find out soon enough.”
Kael stepped in front of Elena.
“You're not getting near her.”
The stranger laughed.
“You think you're strong enough to stop me?”
Adrian moved beside Kael.
“Two princes against one stranger.”
The man's eyes flashed black.
“Two princes won't matter.”
The forest suddenly went silent.
Even the wind disappeared.
Elena felt something approaching.
Something powerful.
Her chest tightened.
“Kael…”
“I know.”
The stranger raised his hand.
A wave of dark energy rushed toward them.
Kael and Adrian raised their arms.
The impact sent them sliding backward.
Elena screamed.
“Stop!”
The darkness vanished.
Everyone froze.
Elena stared at her hands.
A faint blue light surrounded her fingers.
The stranger looked shocked.
“You're already awakening.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“What do you want from me?”
“To take you to your father.”
“My father is dead.”
“No.”
The stranger stepped closer.
“He's been waiting for you.”
Before Elena could respond, a howl echoed through the forest.
The stranger disappeared into the shadows.
Kael immediately looked at Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
Adrian picked up the black pendant.
“We need to tell the headmaster.”
“No,” Elena said.
Both princes looked at her.
“If the headmaster knows about my father, I need to find out myself.”
Kael frowned.
“You don't know who you can trust.”
“Exactly.”

That evening, Elena returned to her dormitory.
She locked the door.
Then she placed the pendant on her desk.
For years, she'd wondered about her father.
Her mother had always refused to speak about him.
Whenever Elena asked, her mother only said:
He was dangerous.
But now someone had told her he was alive.
Elena touched the pendant.
A strange warmth traveled through her fingers.
Suddenly, the room disappeared.
She found herself standing in a forest.
A man stood several feet away.
He had Elena's eyes.
“Dad?”
The man turned.
His face was older than she remembered from the few photographs she'd seen.
But there was no doubt.
It was him.
“Elena.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Where are you?”
“I don't have much time.”
“Why did you leave us?”
He looked down.
“To protect you.”
“From what?”
He hesitated.
“Your blood.”
Elena's heart raced.
“What is wrong with my blood?”
“You aren't simply half-Alpha.”
She waited.
“You are the descendant of the First Alpha.”
The vision suddenly began fading.
“Wait!”
Her father reached toward her.
“When the mark appears completely, they will come for you.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
The vision vanished.
Elena collapsed onto her bed.
She stared at the pendant.
The door suddenly opened.
Kael stood there.
Elena jumped up.
“How did you get in?”
“You didn't answer when I knocked.”
“You can't just enter my room.”
“I know.”
His expression was serious.
“We have a problem.”
Elena folded her arms.
“What?”
“Someone attacked the academy.”
Her heart stopped.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
Kael looked toward the window.
“But they left a message.”
“What message?”
Kael looked at her.
“They wrote one name.”
Elena swallowed.
“Whose?”
“Yours.”

The academy was placed under lockdown.
Students were ordered to remain inside their dormitories.
Guards surrounded the grounds.
Elena stood beside Kael and Adrian in the main hall.
Professor Rowan held a piece of black cloth.
On it was the same symbol as Elena's pendant.
“The enemy knows you're here,” he said.
Elena stared at him.
“You knew this would happen.”
The professor didn't answer.
“You knew about my father.”
Still nothing.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Professor.”
Rowan finally looked at him.
“Tell her the truth.”
The professor sighed.
“Your father was once the strongest Alpha in the northern kingdoms.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“He ruled?”
“No.”
Rowan shook his head.
“He refused the throne.”
“Why?”
“Because he discovered the existence of the First Bloodline.”
Elena looked down.
“My bloodline.”
“Yes.”
Kael frowned.
“Why would someone hide that?”
“Because the First Alpha wasn't simply powerful.”
Rowan's voice lowered.
“He could command every wolf.”
Silence filled the hall.
Elena shook her head.
“That can't be true.”
“It is.”
Adrian looked at her.
“If you inherit that power…”
“I could control every Alpha.”
Rowan nodded.
“And that's why they will come for you.”
Suddenly, every candle in the hall went out.
A cold wind swept through the room.
Then a voice echoed from the darkness.
“Not every Alpha.”
A figure appeared at the end of the hall.
“But every wolf.”
Elena's mark burst into light.
Kael reached for her.
Adrian drew his sword.
The figure smiled.
“Your awakening has begun.”
Elena's eyes turned silver.
And for the first time, a powerful wolf growled inside her mind.
