Chapter 5 — The Attack

893 Words
The sound of the academy gates collapsing shook the entire building. Students screamed. Guards rushed through the corridors, ordering everyone to remain inside. Elena stood in the old library, staring through the window. Hundreds of wolves surrounded Blackthorn Academy. Their eyes glowed in the darkness. “They're here for me,” she whispered. Kael stepped beside her. “Then they'll have to get through us first.” Adrian looked toward the entrance. “There are too many.” Lucian remained unusually calm. “You don't understand.” Kael turned toward him. “Then explain.” Lucian looked at Elena. “They aren't here to capture her.” Elena's stomach tightened. “Then why?” “To make sure her power awakens.” A deep howl echoed outside. The lights in the academy flickered. Elena's chest burned. She grabbed the edge of the table. “It's happening again.” Adrian noticed the change in her eyes. “Your mark.” Silver light spread beneath her skin. Kael reached for her. “Elena, stay calm.” “I can't!” A wave of energy burst from her. The books on the shelves flew into the air. Kael and Adrian were pushed backward. Lucian didn't move. “Elena,” he said calmly. She looked at him. “You need to control it.” “How?” “Listen to your wolf.” Elena closed her eyes. The voice returned. Let me protect you. She took a shaky breath. “No.” You cannot keep me locked away. Elena opened her eyes. The silver glow faded. The books dropped. Everyone stared at her. Then the doors exploded inward. A group of masked warriors entered. Kael immediately moved in front of Elena. “Stay behind me.” One of the warriors laughed. “The princes are protecting her.” Another stepped forward. “Interesting.” Adrian raised his weapon. “Who sent you?” The warrior pointed at Elena. “The king.” Elena's heart stopped. “What king?” “The king who owns the blood you carry.” Kael frowned. “She doesn't belong to anyone.” The warrior laughed. “That is where you're wrong.” He charged. Kael blocked him. Adrian attacked another warrior. The library erupted into chaos. Elena backed away. She had never seen anything like this. The masked warriors moved with frightening precision. One broke through the fight and reached for her. Elena raised her hands. A burst of silver energy struck him. He flew backward. Everyone stopped. The warrior slowly stood. His voice was shaken. “She can already use it.” Lucian's expression darkened. “That's not good.” Elena looked at him. “Why?” “Because now they know how powerful you are.” More warriors entered. Kael looked at Elena. “We need to get you somewhere safe.” “Where?” “The underground tunnels.” Lucian shook his head. “They'll be waiting there.” Adrian looked at him. “Then where do we take her?” Lucian pointed toward the northern tower. “The old observatory.” Kael frowned. “That's sealed.” “Not anymore.” They ran. --- The corridors were filled with students and guards. Elena stayed between Kael and Adrian. Neither prince left her side. Suddenly, a warrior appeared ahead. Kael stepped forward. “Keep moving.” He attacked. Adrian joined him. Elena continued with Lucian. They reached the staircase. Then Elena stopped. “Where's Adrian?” Kael looked back. “He's coming.” A crash sounded from below. Adrian appeared seconds later. “Run!” They reached the observatory. Lucian placed his hand against the door. Ancient symbols appeared. The door opened. Inside was a circular room filled with old maps. At the center stood a stone pedestal. Elena walked toward it. Something pulled her forward. “Don't touch it,” Lucian warned. She stopped. “What is it?” “The Crown of the First Alpha.” Kael stared at the pedestal. “That thing is real?” “Yes.” Adrian looked at Elena. “Why is it reacting to her?” Lucian didn't answer. Elena stepped closer. The crown began glowing. A voice whispered inside her mind. You are ready. Elena shook her head. “No.” The crown lifted from the pedestal. It floated toward her. Kael grabbed her arm. “Don't.” The crown stopped inches from Elena. Then the observatory doors slammed shut. A voice came from behind them. “You should have listened to your father.” Everyone turned. A man stood in the doorway. Elena recognized his eyes immediately. The same eyes she'd seen in the vision. Her breath caught. “Dad?” The man looked at her. “I'm sorry, Elena.” She couldn't move. “Why?” His expression was filled with regret. “Because I couldn't protect you from them.” He looked toward the crown. “And now it's too late.” Elena's heart raced. “What are you talking about?” Her father looked at Kael and Adrian. Then at Lucian. “They've already chosen sides.” Elena frowned. “Who has?” Her father stepped forward. “The kingdoms.” He looked directly at her. “They know you're alive.” The crown began glowing brighter. “And they're coming for their queen.”
