CHAPTER 10

2281 Words
Saran drove with tears streaming down his cheeks but did not wipe them away. As a lump swelled inside his throat, he began to wonder about why he was crying in the first place. If he was crying for Kit, then he did not deserve the tears. Why did he not see it coming? Kit had accused him of smothering him over little things like wanting to know where he was or why he was sticking his nose in his business. The signs were there; he just didn't see them. Or Maybe he didn't want to see them. People like Kit always want the things that they gave away or the love that they left behind and people like Saran wanted to believe them when they come back and apologize for their hurtful actions. So he shows up with the most beautiful bouquet and then says that he is sorry, while Saran was still picking up the pieces of the mess he had made. People like Kit always want back the love that they pushed aside, and that frustrated Saran the more he thought about it. Why was he now sorry? Is it so that he can wrap Saran's heart around his little finger? Saran clutched tightly on the steering wheel like he wanted to rip it off the dashboard. "Calm down, calm down…." Saran began taking deep breaths so that he can relax his nerves and not get himself worked up over seeing Kit again. Saran relaxed his hands on the steering wheel and soon he was parking the hatchback in the underground parking lot of his parents' building. A text appears on the screen of his smartphone. Picking it up, Saran realized it was from Banks in their group chat, reminding them of a zoom call later that day. Picking up his holdall bag, Saran got out and locked the car. Made his way into the elevator and rode up to his parents' flat. On entering the flat, he found his mother with her hair and makeup done, a smartphone mounted on a tripod with ring lights, filming a how to make a pear cobbler cocktail for **. Saran collapsed into a sofa and watched her with a happy face as she added brandy and sherry to cube-sized pears in a snifter glass. Saran's mother belonged to one of the oldest, most honored Thai families. And at eighteen, was introduced to society by her cousin before traveling to Berlin with the same cousin. While his father, Colonel Apichat Pattamasoot was agreeable, handsome, ill-tempered and witty. After attending a Royal Military Academy, he was sent by a Royal scholarship to study at a Military Academy in a town near Berlin Germany. And as fate will have it, he was introduced to Saran's mother at a fancy society dance. And the rest as they say is history. After Mrs. Pattamasoot was done with her filming she sat down with her son to catch up while sharing a chocolate cake with a Coke drink. "I have so much to tell you, the Singlampoog family visited us last weekend and had a great time with them. Then we went to a party hosted by Mrs. Ammarat and guess who was also at the party?" "Who?" "Kit." "Kit?" "Yes, darling and I was very surprised to see him there. He was polite and all, and very nice I must say." Saran did not say anything and just kept on eating more chocolate cake. "Is he seeing someone else?" She asked her son. "I don't know." "I could not do any shopping yesterday because it rained all afternoon. But now that you are here we can do it together." Saran smiled. "Oh, yes… did you know that Klomklom family has moved away and their flat has already been sold." "Really? Where are they living now?" Saran sipped his Coke drink. "In Thonglor." Later that evening Saran sat in his childhood bedroom and was on a Zoom call with Banks and Yok. They all had their video on. "Don't keep us waiting anymore, just tell us!" Yok demanded as he ate his apple. "Well I received an email to let me know I will be honored as this year's maverick at the Adonis MM Awards." "That is so cool." Saran put down the book he was reading. "We are happy for you. Congratulations." "Thank you, for the support and for being great friends." "Yok met someone today," Saran began. "Really, who?" Banks laughs. Yok realized that his friends were now teasing him. "He is nobody," Yok replied. "He is not a nobody. He smells really nice, and drives an expensive car." Saran revealed. "Oh so you have finally found someone?" Banks gave a faint smile. Yok groaned before he added: "I am not going to jump into a relationship because I met someone." "Maybe it's because you enjoy being alone." "Yes, I love my own company." Yok replied. "There is nothing wrong with enjoying your own company." "Thank you," Yok said before he took another bite of his apple. "People are in relationships that are not healthy because they are afraid of being alone." Banks added. "That is also very true." "I don't want to be in a relationship just because someone likes me." Yok interposed. Saran nodded before adding: "Yes, you shouldn't do that." "So what are you going to do now?" Banks asked. "I need time to think about it before I decide anything." "Well maybe you will never see him again." "I don't mind if we never meet again." "That is sad because I think he really likes you." "Saran just shut up, he is not the only handsome man in the world." Yok interposed again "Are you hesitant because you notice any red flags?" Banks asked. No, I didn't see any." "Just do you," Saran went on, "and it's okay to not settle for anything less than the best." "I totally agree with Saran." Banks smiled. After the Zoom call ended with his friends, Saran could hear voices coming from the lounge. He could clearly distinguish his parents' voices. But there was a third voice that was familiar. Leaving his bedroom Saran walked towards the lounge, then he suddenly stopped his tracks. His eyes grew wide with astonishment. "Saran, we have a guest for with us," Mrs. Pattamasoot replied. "Your father invited him to join us for dinner." Saran’s heart started palpitating which made him a little dizzy. "Saran, this is Police Captain Tito," Colonel Pattamasoot went on, "Police Captain this is Saran, our son." Police Captain Tito rose from his chair and said: " I am pleased that we are now formally introduced to each other. There was a mischievous twinkle in his eyes as he said it.
