“How are you?” I asked. “Fine.” “I’m sorry. I should have called earlier. I’ve been worried about you since I saw you last night.” “Don’t be.” “What’s going on with you and Andrew?” “Nothing.” I hesitated. “Is he a homophobe?” Ryan laughed. “No, he’s not a homophobe. He plays the trumpet in the jazz band, for Christ’s sake.” “So? Trumpet players in the jazz band can’t be homophobes?” “That’s not what I’m saying. Just trust me when I tell you that Andrew is not anti-gay.” “Then what’s going on with you two? You didn’t get punched in the face for nothing. Tell me what’s going on.
