Chapter 5

348 Words
The conversation with Sydney lingered in her mind long after she put her phone down. She wasn’t used to this—to someone actually caring. It felt foreign, almost unreal, like a dream she would wake up from. But the words were still there, glowing softly on the screen. "You’re important. And I’m not going anywhere." She read them over and over until exhaustion finally pulled her into sleep. The Next Day Morning came, but the weight in her chest wasn’t as suffocating as before. It was still there—she wasn’t magically okay—but something had shifted. At school, she felt the usual stares, heard the familiar whispers. The ones that made her feel small. But when she looked up, she saw Sydney across the hall. Their eyes met, and Sydney gave her a small smile. A real one. Not the fake, forced smiles she was used to. And against all odds, she found herself smiling back. At lunch, Sydney sat beside her instead of with her usual group. "Hey," she said casually, but there was something in her voice—something gentle. "Hey," she mumbled back, unsure of what to say. Sydney didn’t push. She didn’t ask a million questions or expect her to suddenly spill everything. She just sat there, eating her food, acting like it was the most normal thing in the world. But to her, it wasn’t normal. It was new. It was someone choosing to be near her, without expecting anything in return. For the first time in a long time, she didn’t feel invisible. Later That Night She stared at her reflection in the mirror. The scars on her arms were still there. The pain inside her hadn’t vanished. But something was different. Sydney’s words echoed in her mind. "You don’t have to go through this alone." Maybe she wasn’t ready to believe it yet. Maybe she still had a long way to go. But tonight, for the first time in forever, she placed the blade back in the drawer instead of using it. And that was enough. For now.
