Salt’s affect on preserving fish came about naturally, and unexpectedly. The Addians had long fished the seas so they were accustomed to sewing nets for the little sea creatures that squirmed through the shallows. They knew how to whittle a deer’s antlers into harpoon-shaped spears, and how to bait a hook made of carved bone or stone to catch larger fish. They built underwater corrals by stacking rocks and branches under the water to herd schools of fish that they could then scoop out of the trap. They also discovered that when fish were left on the rocks outside the water, they dried out and were left covered in a thin layer of salt.
