CHAPTER FIVE: A WHISPER FROM THE PAST

303 Words
LUCY COULDN’T SLEEP THAT NIGHT. The man’s cryptic warning echoed in her mind. “Evidence.” What could he have meant? The letters seemed deeply personal, filled with passion and heartbreak – but evidence? Evidence of what? By morning, she had resolved to dig deeper. Lucy carefully reexamined the letters, searching for details she might have missed. In the second-to-last letter, something caught her eye: "Our meeting place will always be the same – beneath the old oak tree by the river, where the world cannot touch us. If we are found out, the consequences will be grave, but I cannot imagine a life without you." Lucy knew the tree. It was on the outskirts of town, near the abandoned railway bridge. It had been a favorite spot for couples and wanderers, but now it was overgrown, forgotten. She decided to go there, hoping to find answers. The walk to the riverbank was eerie. The path, once lively, was now shrouded in silence. When she reached the old oak tree, she noticed something unusual. The soil near its roots looked disturbed, as if it had been recently dug up and replaced. Her curiosity burning, Lucy borrowed a small gardening spade from her bag and began digging. Her hands trembled as she unearthed a rusted tin box. The lid creaked as she opened it, revealing a collection of items: a photograph of a young couple – Rose and Adrian, their faces radiant with happiness; a golden locket engraved with the initials R&A; and a letter marked To Be Opened Only If I Am Gone. Lucy’s fingers hovered over the letter. With a deep breath, she unfolded it. The message was short, but it sent chills down her spine: "If you’ve found this, it means I couldn’t protect Adrian. He’s innocent. Please, find the truth."
