Chapter 5: Into the Unknown Erica’s POV I can’t seem to catch my breath. The moment I step away from the front door, I can feel the weight of everything crashing down on me. The house is too quiet. Too still. Even the wind has stopped blowing, as if the world is holding its breath, waiting for something. I walk back to the living room, my feet cold against the wooden floor. My hands are shaking, and I clench them into fists to stop the tremors. I glance over at Lily’s sleeping form, still safe on the couch. My heart aches for her, for the innocence she has. She shouldn’t be caught up in whatever this is. I hear a car door slam outside. My heart leaps into my throat. Jake. He’s here. I don’t waste a second. I pull open the living room window, sticking my head out to look. I see him standing at the edge of the woods, his back to the house. His posture is tense, like he’s listening for something—waiting for something. I open my mouth to shout, but I stop myself. I don’t want to scare Lily. And I don’t want to alert whatever’s out there. Jake glances over his shoulder and catches my eye. His face is tight, his eyes narrowing like he’s trying to see through the darkness. He gestures for me to stay inside, but I can’t. I have to know what’s going on. I can’t stay inside while this is happening. I grab my coat from the hook by the door, slip my boots on, and pull the door open quietly. I’m careful not to make a sound. The last thing I need is to give away my position to whoever—or whatever—might be lurking in the shadows. “Erica, what are you doing?” Jake’s voice is low but harsh as I step out onto the porch. He’s already started walking back toward the house, his footsteps slow and deliberate. “Get back inside.” “No,” I whisper, shaking my head. “I’m not staying in there. What’s out there, Jake? What was that thing?” Jake looks at me like I’ve lost my mind. “You don’t need to know. Just get back inside, okay? I’ll handle it.” “No, you won’t,” I snap, taking a step toward him. “What is it? Why won’t you tell me?” Jake’s jaw clenches, and for a moment, I see something flash across his face—something I can’t quite place. It’s not fear, not exactly. But it’s something close. “Erica…” He takes a deep breath. “I’ll explain later. Just go back inside with Lily. Trust me.” I shake my head again, harder this time. “No, Jake. You’ve been hiding something from me. You’ve been hiding everything from me.” He glances behind him toward the woods, as if expecting something to jump out at any moment. His voice drops to a whisper. “I don’t have time to explain, but I’m not leaving you out here. I’m your brother. I’ll protect you, okay?” The words settle in my chest like a weight. I can’t tell if it’s because I believe him or because I’m scared of what might happen if I don’t. But I can’t shake the feeling. Something is watching us. Something is out there. “I’m not going anywhere, Jake,” I say quietly, my voice trembling with emotion. “I want to know the truth. Now.” Jake’s gaze hardens, his muscles tense as if he’s gearing up for something. His eyes flicker over to the trees again, and I can see his body coiling, like he’s ready to run. “You won’t like it.” “I don’t care,” I reply, my voice barely more than a whisper. I take a step forward, closer to him. “Tell me, Jake. What’s going on? Why did you look at me like that earlier? And what’s out there in the woods?” For a long moment, he’s silent, his expression unreadable. Then, without warning, he lets out a sigh and turns to face me fully. “You’re right. I’ve been hiding things from you,” he admits, his voice tense. “But you’re not ready for this.” I stare at him, willing him to continue. Every second feels like an eternity. I’m not sure what I’m expecting, but I know I need to hear it. “Tell me, Jake.” He looks at me, his eyes softening. For a brief moment, I see something in them—guilt. But then, just as quickly, it’s gone. “It’s not just wolves out there,” he says quietly. “It’s something worse.” I feel my blood run cold. I open my mouth, but no words come out. I shake my head. “What do you mean? What could be worse than a wolf?” Jake hesitates, and for the first time since I’ve arrived back in Silver Hollow, I see a flash of real fear in his eyes. He glances toward the woods, then back at me. “I’m not going to lie to you. It’s not just animals out there, Erica. It’s… creatures. Shapeshifters. People who can turn into something else—something dangerous. And they’ve been here for as long as we’ve lived in this town.” The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I take a step back, my mind racing. I can’t—I can’t—believe what he’s saying. “Shapeshifters?” I repeat, my voice shaking. “You’re telling me there are… monsters in the woods?” Jake’s face darkens. “They’re not monsters. Not to them. They’re not all bad, but they’re dangerous, Erica. And you—” He stops, his voice catching in his throat. “You don’t know what you’re dealing with.” I’m about to ask more, but then I hear it. A sound from deep in the woods. A low growl, almost imperceptible, but unmistakable. My blood runs cold. “Jake,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “What was that?” Jake’s face goes pale. “We need to go inside. Now.” But before he can take a step forward, something moves in the trees. A shadow. Then another. The growl grows louder, closer. I freeze, staring into the darkness, my heart pounding in my chest. The creatures Jake spoke of—they’re out there. And they’re coming closer. “Erica…” Jake’s voice is strained. He grabs my arm and yanks me back toward the house, urgency in his every movement. “We can’t outrun them. We need to get inside.” I follow him, my legs like lead. But just as we’re halfway to the porch, a loud, snarling sound rips through the air. It’s too close—too real. I hear the sound of heavy footsteps behind us, fast and powerful. I turn just as Jake yells, “Run!” But before I can even move, a massive shape steps out of the darkness. A figure—tall, wide, with glowing eyes and fur that looks like it was made from the night itself. It stands there, staring at us, its breath coming out in heavy clouds of mist. Jake steps in front of me, his body tense, his hands clenched into fists. “Stay behind me, Erica,” he growls. The creature—no, the man—smirks. The glow in his eyes flickers like firelight. Then, he speaks in a voice so deep it rumbles through the air. “You shouldn’t have come back, Jake.” I’m frozen. My body won’t move. I’m trapped in this nightmare, and I can’t seem to wake up. Jake doesn’t back down. “I’m not leaving. Not this time.” The man takes a step forward, his teeth sharp and white in the dim light. “Then we do this the hard way.” And suddenly, everything goes to hell.
