A Shift in the Wind - a few days before SilverMoon’s arrival
As Crystal and Beth enjoyed a rare moment of silence, the gentle clink of teacups filled the quiet sitting area. The breeze rustled the pine branches outside, but the air inside was silent and heavy with unsaid words.
Beth looked away as she stirred her tea, she stated, "We received a message today”. “From SilverMoon.”
Crystal looked up, brow raised. “What kind of message?”
Beth hesitated for a beat. “Lucien is coming. In person. With his delegation.”
Crystal blinked. “Lucien? The Alpha himself?”
Beth gave a slow nod. “It’s unusual. Alphas don’t make these trips unless it’s super important.”
Crystal sat back, processing. “I thought we had a neutral relationship with SilverMoon.”
“We do. On paper.” Beth met her daughter’s eyes. “But Lucien… he doesn’t make neutral moves. Everything he does is strategic.”
Crystal frowned. “Is Father worried?”
“He’s being cautious. As he should be.” Beth’s voice was low, but firm. “I’ve seen what SilverMoon is capable of when they want something.”
Silence settled between them before Beth reached out and placed a hand over Crystal’s.
“I want you to keep your eyes open when they arrive. Listen more than you speak. And don’t let Lucien’s charm distract you.”
Crystal nodded slowly. “You think this visit could lead to something more?”
“I think,” Beth said carefully, “that change is coming. And Lucien might be the one bringing it.”
---------
The central courtyard of IceClaw was bathed in a golden glow from the early light, and the air was charged with anticipation. Elders and civilians gathered to watch the SilverMoon delegation arrive, and warriors stood in order, their armor shining.
Crystal was standing next to Alpha Derek, staring off into the distance. A procession of SilverMoon's warriors, dressed in silver and dark blue, commanded by Alpha Lucien himself, appeared as the sound of hooves in the distance became louder.
Lucien dismounted gracefully, his silver hair catching the light. He approached with a confident stride, extending a hand to Derek.
"Alpha Derek," Lucien said in a silky voice. "It's been too long."
Derek firmly gripped his hand.
“I trust IceClaw is still as resilient as ever”, his eyes briefly scanning the courtyard.
Derek’s jaw tightened just slightly. “Resilient and watchful.”
The delegation was led to the Council Hall as formalities came to an end, but Crystal couldn't help but feel that this visit was more than just a diplomatic courtesy.
Lucien walked with the poise of someone used to authority, his every gesture calculated. He was just as charismatic as Beth had said, but she couldn't help but notice the calculation behind his smile.
Later, inside the stone walls of the Council Hall, Lucien made his proposal: "The trade routes between our territories have been underutilized," he began, unfolding a map. "By collaborating, we can expand commerce, benefiting both our packs." Derek furrowed his brow as he studied the map."These routes pass through IceClaw lands. What exactly are you proposing?"
Lucien smiled. "A joint venture. Shared patrols, mutual profits. Unity in strength."
The room fell silent. Elder Mara exchanged a glance with Derek, who remained stoic.
"We'll consider your proposal," Derek said finally.
As the meeting ended, Crystal approached Derek. "You don't trust him," she noted.
Derek nodded subtly. "Lucien's charm masks ambition. We must tread carefully."
The air felt thicker, as if something unspoken lingered in IceClaw after SilverMoon pack had left. Like a storm brewing just over the horizon, Crystal sensed a pull of uncertainty.
Alpha Derek quickly called a gathering of the elders. The Council Hall's stone walls echoed with worried whispers as the most prestigious members of the pack assembled. Crystal was standing at the rear of the room, staring at her dad. The weight of the decision he would soon have to make overshadowed his usually confident manner.
Elder Mara's voice pierced the room, "I don't like it. Even though Lucien smiled as he left, his objectives are not as innocent as he seems”.
Derek's jaw tensed as he nodded. "Over the years that I've known Lucien, I've never witnessed him act in a way that didn't have a deeper motive."
"What are we going to do?" Elder Regan asked, his deep voice laced with concern. “We’ve heard his offer; joint patrols, shared profits, expansion of trade; but what if this is just the first step in something much bigger?”
Derek replied, "Agreed." "Until I know exactly what SilverMoon is pursuing, I'm not ready to give them a single inch of our land."
Beth, who had attended the meeting, looked at her daughter thoughtfully. "We must exercise caution, but we must also be ready.
The tension in the room grew, and Crystal could feel it. Everyone was obviously skeptical of Lucien, but none had a firm idea of what he may do next.
"We will closely monitor SilverMoon's movements," Derek stated in a determined tone. And we'll be ready for anything. However, we must play it smart for the time being. We'll hold off. And we'll pay attention.
Shortly after, the meeting was adjourned, but Crystal couldn't get rid of the thought that the surrounding silence was more dangerous than the noise. Her head was full of questions. What did Lucien actually want? And why did she feel as though something about the visit hadn’t been fully revealed?
Later that evening, after the meeting had completed, she sought comfort in the courtyard, walking carefully through the snow, the crisp air stinging at her skin. In contrast to the uneasiness she felt in her tummy, the sky was clear and the stars were dazzling.
She nearly missed the sound of approaching footsteps since she was so engrossed in her thoughts. She looked up and saw Logan approaching her, his comforting grin giving her the reassurance she sorely needed.
His voice was soft as he asked, "Couldn't sleep?"
"I have a lot on my mind," Crystal answered. "The visit... I'm not sure. There seems to be more to it than what we were told.
Logan stopped next to her, his hands stuffed deep into his coat pockets. "I get it. Don't let it consume you though. Our pack is strong. Whatever comes our way, we'll face it.
Crystal looked up at him, her gaze scanning his face for any clue as to his thoughts. "Do you believe I'm exaggerating?"
"No," he answered, his face becoming softer. "I believe you're just being cautious And that's smart.
Logan's presence was grounding, a constant in a world that felt uncertain; they stood together for a long time, the only sound between them being the wind rustling the trees.
“You’ve been distant lately. More than usual. You’re always busy, always somewhere else”, Crystal said quietly after a long silence,
His eyes softened with understanding, and he moved closer, putting a hand on her shoulder. “I'm not going anywhere, Crystal. I'm here. Always."
She nodded, trying to push away the growing feeling that something was wrong. She had to have faith that he would be there for her, as he had always been.

The Next Day
After breakfast, Crystal tried to shake the uneasiness that had taken hold of her chest, but it persisted like a shadow.
She was drawn to the training yard in the hopes that the rhythmic sound of battle would help her focus, and she was met by the sight of Logan sparring with one of the younger warriors.
Logan's movements were confident and fluid, but something about his fighting today was different; he was more reckless and intense. "Logan!" Crystal called, her voice echoing across the yard, and he paused mid-strike, his chest heaving with effort as he glanced over at her.
"Crystal? You okay?"
She crossed the yard to him and said, "I should be asking you that." "You're pushing yourself excessively."
His eyes were guarded, yet he smiled tightly at her. Just staying sharp. Cannot afford to miss anything
Crystal stepped forward and looked into his face. "What's going on, Logan? Lately, you've been... off. Is something not right?
Logan was silent for a moment. His fists tightened as if he were holding something back, and his eyes fell to the floor. “It’s nothing,” he answered finally, his voice nearly a whisper. "I'm all right. simply trying to keep everything under control.
Crystal couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was about to shift , and she wasn't sure if she was prepared for it.
