“Patience is not just about waiting for something… it’s about how you wait, or your attitude while waiting.” ~ Joyce Meyer
Abigail and Calista had not been allowed in the room where the procedure was being performed. The doctor said the bone marrow transplant would take about four hours. They had to get the cells from Bella, filter them, and then give the cells to their mother. Their mother would be in the hospital for a few days to avoid infection and so the doctors could keep an eye on her.
Since Abigail was a nurse, she had decided to take time off from work to care for their mother until she got her strength back. The two discussed what needed to be done to ensure their mother’s speedy recovery.
The nurse entered and told them that Bella was in her room and that they could go see her. She had come threw her part just fine and would be able to go home later that day. The girls went back to see Bella. She smiled tiredly as they came in. How is Aunt Bonnie, Bella asked? She is still getting the transplant. Oh, I thought she would be done by now. Just then the doctor came in and told the girls that their mother had come through the procedure just fine and was in recovery. She would be moved to her room soon and then the nurse would come get them to see her. He warned them that she would be tired and that their visit needed to be brief. He told Bella she would be able to go home later that day and to call him if she needed anything.
Abigail started giggling as the doctor walked out. What? said Bella. Calista said, you know what? Abigail started singing their favorite song from childhood. Bella and the doctor sitting in a tree, hush snapped Bella.
Aunt Bonnie laid in her bed waiting for the girls to come in. She had felt like she was on a sinking ship, now she felt like she had been pulled from the water and was on a life raft. Life was going to be get better now. She had to think positive and hoped that this worked.
In walked the girls. They were in gowns and masks. The nurse reminded them not to get close and not to be too long. They asked how she was. Aunt Bonne smiled weakly and told them she was better now and that she loved them very much.
The girls told her they loved her and would be by to check on her tomorrow.
A week had gone by. The doctor said their mother was doing good and that he expected a full recovery. Their mom would be able to come home today. Abigail and Bella were excited with anticipation. Abigail went to pick Aunt Bonnie up from the hospital leaving Bella at home.
Abigail and Aunt Bonnie had been surprised not to see Bella at home when they returned home. When Bella returned, Abigail asked her where she had been. Bella hesitated not wanting to tell them what she had been up to. I have been riding around looking at how much the town had changed. Aunt Bonnie still looked frail, but she was looking a lot better. Aunt Bonnie got up from the chair and made her way to the couch. She began laughing. Alright girls stop hovering. I am fine. I am sure you all have things you need to be doing.
