Ch11

The forest stretched endlessly, sunlight slicing through the canopy in golden shards. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, every distant birdcall was etched into my senses, amplified by Fenrir’s instincts coursing through my chest. Training with Lucian had always been intense, but today felt different. Our movements had grown sharper, faster, more lethal—years of preparation manifesting in seamless coordination. Lucian crouched low, eyes like molten gold, claws just barely extended. He grinned. “You’re going to have to do better than that,” he teased. Then he was gone, a streak of lightning, faster than the human eye could follow. I shifted mid-step. Fenrir surged, instincts coiling like steel springs. My paws hit the ground silently, muscles folding and snapping in unison. Years of training had built this rhythm—we moved as one, every feint, strike, dodge, and counter preordained yet instinctive. A snap of a branch, faint and deliberate, set my ears on high alert. Fenrir growled, low and vibrating inside my chest. Rogues. I leapt from a low branch we’d been using for agility drills, paws landing silently on the forest floor. Fenrir’s senses flared, scanning. Six of them, moving with overconfidence, unaware of what—or who—they were challenging. “Shift,” I said, voice low, almost a growl. Fenrir flared in approval, our heartbeats syncing, energy coiling like lightning. In an instant, I blurred, fur spreading across my body as the world narrowed to instinct. Pain from shifting was gone—years of training had made it instantaneous. Lucian didn’t shift; he didn’t need to. Fingers extended into razor-sharp claws, teeth bared, body taut and coiled. Lightning itself would have looked slow in comparison. His eyes tracked the rogues, reading their muscles, anticipating their motions, every heartbeat predicting the next attack. The first rogue charged, a crude blade raised. I met him mid-leap, jaws sinking deep into his shoulder. He screamed, stumbling, blood spraying onto the mossy forest floor. My claws raked across his chest, silencing him as he crumpled. Lucian struck simultaneously, hands raking across the torso of the rogue next to him, fangs grazing flesh, teeth piercing, and the rogue collapsed. Rogue two lunged from the side, swinging a staff. I twisted mid-air, fangs clamping into his forearm. His scream ripped through the trees, but I didn’t pause. Claws slashed his chest, ribs snapping under precise pressure. Lucian’s hands struck at his side, claws digging into soft tissue. The rogue’s eyes widened in disbelief as he fell, blood seeping from every strike. The third rogue charged from behind. Fenrir guided me instinctively. I pivoted, powerful jaws closing on the nape of his neck, tearing muscle. Claws shredded his shoulder as Lucian’s lightning-fast strike knocked him backward. Two rogues down, four to go. Rogue four and five came together, trying to flank. One managed to land a swipe on my shoulder, tearing fur and flesh. Pain flashed, but Fenrir kept me steady. I bit into the rogue’s thigh, teeth sinking as claws raked across his chest. Lucian struck the other rogue mid-leap, teeth catching the shoulder and ripping, leaving him stunned on the forest floor. Six rogue—hesitant now—sensed the rhythm of our attack. The way Fenrir and I moved together, Lucian’s unmatched speed, it was a perfect storm. I struck first, jaws clamping into his shoulder, muscle giving way under precise force. Lucian followed, claws digging in, teeth biting, and he went down in a heap, gasping. The seventh rogue, desperate and overconfident, charged, attempting to tackle me from the side. Fenrir coiled low in my chest, guiding every motion. I twisted mid-air, jaws closing on his neck, snapping clean. Lucian’s strike to the chest left him staggering, bleeding, and he finally collapsed. The forest seemed to hold its breath as we assessed the aftermath. Blood slicked the mossy ground, the rogues groaning and writhing, some unconscious, others trying to crawl away. I shook my head, ears flicking, tail lashing inside my chest, fur damp with the mixture of blood and sweat. Fenrir purred low, calming the surge of adrenaline. Only a few scratches and bites marked me. Healing surged through my body in minutes, fur smoothing over torn skin, muscles knitting back together. Lucian flexed his fingers, retracting claws, scanning the forest for the last trace of threat. Raven, fully in Shadow form, gray fur blending with the tree line, had observed the entire fight. Silent, calm, ever watchful. He never moved, never interfered, because he knew the king of wolves already had it under control. Lucian exhaled softly, voice even, pride gleaming in his eyes. “Still got it,” he said, fingers flexing into claws again briefly. I shook my head, panting, letting Fenrir settle inside me. The forest quieted, only leaves whispering in the breeze. Years of hand-to-hand combat, joint training with Lucian, practicing against supernatural opponents—this was the result. We were perfect in sync, a lethal unit, faster than thought, more precise than fear itself. My thoughts drifted briefly to Aurora. Fifteen, laughing with me in the sunlight, unaware of the world beneath her feet, unaware of the future king she walked beside. Fenrir’s low rumble reminded me: our bond, our training, our power, all of it was for battles yet to come. She would learn everything in time. For now, the forest was ours. Lucian, breathing heavily but unbowed, shook blood from his hands. I padded forward, claws leaving marks in the soft earth, fur bristling with energy. Fenrir hummed in approval, ears twitching, tail flicking inside my chest. The rogues had underestimated us. They had assumed numbers would suffice. But experience, coordination, and raw instinct won the day. And even as the forest returned to calm, the knowledge lingered—this was only the beginning. The kingdom waited. One day, our training, our bond, and our power would be tested fully. But today, we had triumphed. And the forest, golden with sunlight, bore witness to the king of wolves at the height of his power.
