The forest lay quiet under the first pale light of dawn, but the stillness was deceptive. Snow crunched beneath Shadow’s massive paws, each step deliberate, muscles coiled beneath his charcoal-gray fur streaked with silver. Amber eyes scanned the treeline, alert, ears twitching at the faintest whisper of movement—the groan of frost-laden branches, the flutter of a startled bird, even the subtle shift of snow along the slope. Behind him, Liora held Rowen close, her cloak wrapped tightly around his small body. The boy shivered, violet-tinged icy blue eyes wide with fear and exhaustion. Every so often, his trembling fingers would dig into Liora’s arm as if clinging to the only thing keeping him tethered to safety. She whispered spells of warmth, faint glimmers of light tracing along his spine. “Stay close, Rowen,” she murmured, her voice low and urgent. “There’s something out there.” The scents of blood and ash from the Blackthorn palace’s attack still clung to the wind. Shadow’s snout twitched, pulling it in with precision. Beneath it was something more—iron and rot, subtle but unmistakable. Dark magic. They’re coming, Shadow rumbled in her mind, a low vibration that pressed against her chest and warmed it with reassurance. She nodded, silent. I feel it too. Rogues—but not ordinary ones. Dark witches control them. A snap of a twig sounded like a gunshot in the frozen air. Shadow froze, hackles rising. Amber eyes glimmered with alert fury. Then they erupted from the shadows. Corrupted wolves, hideous beyond natural form. Their fur hung in matted clumps, patchy and scarred, streaked with dirt, blood, and dried gore. Colors varied—muddy brown, pale gray, streaked black and white—but all smelled of decay and malice. Eyes glowed yellow, red, or milky white, pulsing with unnatural energy. The stench of rot hit Rowen first. He gagged and pressed closer to Liora, shivering. Rotting meat, mildew, iron, old blood—it clung to the air, thick and suffocating. Their snarls were wet, ragged, twisted sounds, more like diseased lungs than wolf cries. Saliva dripped from jagged fangs, sizzling slightly where it touched snow. Liora’s hands flared with golden light. “They’re corrupted. Dark witches. Sent after us!” Shadow growled, low and lethal. They already know he’s alive. Rowen’s small hands dug into Liora’s cloak, pressing into Shadow’s thick fur. Fear made his body tremble, heartbeat hammering, and the snow beneath their feet seemed to amplify every crackle, every distant snap. The first rogue lunged. Shadow’s body sprang like a coiled spring. Muscles rippled, powerful and precise. Jaws clamped around the creature mid-leap, crushing it with one clean bite. Blood and fur sprayed the snow. Fenrir stirred within Rowen. Pain, fear, anger—all surged through him. His small body convulsed, reshaping in fire. Bones stretched, fur erupted in black as midnight streaked with lavender-silver, and his violet-tinged icy-blue eyes flared. He roared, voice raw, untested, primal. The corrupted rogues froze. Even Shadow’s disciplined presence had not prepared them for this raw power. Fenrir, Shadow’s voice whispered in Rowen’s mind. Do not falter. I am here. Fenrir’s massive wolf form leapt forward. Jaws clamped down on the first rogue, tearing it from limb to limb. Snow churned into crimson as another tried to circle, only to be slammed into by Shadow, amber eyes blazing, teeth snapping with precision. Liora’s spells flared, searing through the rogues with sizzling bolts of light. The fight exploded. Fenrir moved with raw, terrifying power, crushing, slamming, tearing. Shadow weaved around him, jaws snapping at anything that came too close. Liora ducked and spun, magic arcs slicing through the air, her heart hammering as she kept Rowen safe. The forest became chaos incarnate—fur and snow flying, the scent of blood and rot thick, every breath choked with metallic tang. Fenrir’s lavender-silver streaks shimmered in the pale light as he struck down rogue after rogue. Shadow and Fenrir moved like one pack, instinctual and deadly, coordinating without words. Rowen’s fear was replaced by exhilaration and instinct. Every attack, every dodge, every strike made him feel alive and powerful—but exhaustion crept into his limbs. The corrupted rogues began to hesitate. Their yellow, red, and sickly eyes flickered with fear. They had underestimated the bond between Shadow and Fenrir, the lethal coordination between wolf and boy. Fenrir’s roar shook the trees. Shadow’s growl thundered in reply. Liora’s golden spells seared, lighting up the forest with blinding flashes. At last, the remaining rogues scattered, whining and whimpering as they fled into the shadows, melting away like smoke. Fenrir heaved, chest rising and falling, eyes still glimmering faint violet with icy-blue flecks. Slowly, he shrank back into Rowen’s child form. I am Fenrir, he murmured in Rowen’s mind. I will always be with you. Rowen shivered, exhausted beyond comprehension. Liora gathered him, clutching him tightly. You’re safe. You’re alive. Shadow padded close, amber eyes warm and calculating. He lowered his head, nudging Rowen gently. Strong, young one. You will survive this. Liora mounted Shadow carefully, Rowen against her chest. Her cloak shimmered faintly with a light spell, masking their scent. “We need to move. We can’t stay. Not for long.” Shadow rumbled, muscles coiling beneath her. Lead the way. I’ll keep him safe. Snow crunched beneath their paws as they moved deeper into the forest, leaving the blood-stained clearing behind. The scent of dark magic lingered, a constant warning: the hunt was far from over. Liora’s voice was soft but determined. The human city… it’s our only chance. He’ll be safer there. We just need to reach it before they find us again. Shadow’s ears twitched, amber eyes scanning ahead. No stopping. Not until he’s safe. Fenrir shivered faintly in Rowen’s mind, still new to his power, still trembling—but alive. And Shadow carried them forward, vigilant and watchful, while Liora murmured spells of protection, weaving a fragile, shimmering cloak around them as they vanished into the forest toward the human city. The hunt had begun
