Chapter Two

As the car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Royal Palace, my heart pounded in my chest. The palace was even more magnificent up close, with its towering spires and intricate carvings illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns. The driver opened the door, and Maxine and I stepped out, our heels clicking on the cobblestone path. My balance was unsteady at first, but thankfully, I could hold on to Max for support. It didn't seem to matter what kind of trouble I would always find myself in. She was always there for me, one way or another. I couldn't be more grateful for her help now as well. I really need to try and find a way to repay her if I can. We approached the entrance, where a line of elegantly dressed guests waited to be admitted. A royal servant in a crisp uniform greeted us with a polite bow. "Good evening, ladies. May I see your invitation?" With trembling hands, I handed over the cream-colored envelope. The servant examined it briefly before nodding and handing it back. "Welcome, Miss Grace. Please follow me." We were led to a small table where another servant handed us two beautifully crafted animal masks. Mine was a delicate fox mask, adorned with intricate gold patterns, while Maxine's was a stunning peacock mask with vibrant feathers. "Please put these on before entering," the servant instructed. I slipped the mask over my face, feeling a strange mix of excitement and apprehension. Maxine adjusted her mask and gave me a reassuring smile. "Ready?" I took a deep breath and nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be." We stepped through the grand doors and into the opulent ballroom. The sight took my breath away. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, casting a warm, golden light over the room. Guests in elaborate gowns and suits mingled, their laughter and chatter filling the air. A live orchestra played a soft, enchanting melody, adding to the magical atmosphere. Maxine and I made our way through the crowd, my nerves slowly easing with each step. The champagne and the mask helped me feel a bit more confident, as if I could hide behind the fox's delicate features. As we reached the center of the room, a hush fell over the crowd. I turned to see King Alaric Thorne making his entrance. His presence was commanding, his piercing blue eyes scanning the room with an air of authority. He wore a regal wolf mask, its silver and black design complementing his dark attire. King Alaric Thorne appeared on a stage at the far end of the ballroom, his commanding presence drawing everyone's attention. He raised a hand, and the room fell silent. "Welcome, esteemed guests, to the Royal Palace's year-end celebration," he began, his voice strong and clear. "This year has been one of great challenges and triumphs. We gather here tonight to celebrate our unity, our resilience, and the prosperity we have achieved together." He paused, his gaze sweeping over the crowd. "Let us remember those who have stood by us, and let us look forward to a future filled with hope and promise. Enjoy this evening, and may it be a night to remember." With that, he stepped down from the stage and began to mingle with the guests, his presence both intimidating and captivating. The crowd slowly returned to their conversations, the atmosphere buzzing with excitement. Maxine nudged me gently. "Remember, we're here to enjoy ourselves. Let's make the most of it." Deep down I know she is right, but I feel like a spring being held tight with anxiety, and I could explode free at any moment. I glanced back at my friend, but she had already mingled her way into the crowed. It was so natural for her to be in this environment. She looked like she always belonged here and this was just a regular day for her. Me, on the other hand, stuck out like a sore thumb. I don't belong in a place like this and this party has only made it all the more obvious. I was a fool to think I could ever fit in here, even if it was for a fleeting moment in time. I slink back into the shadows trying to conceal myself further when I bump into a hard surface. The hard surface unexpectedly cleared its throat. "I am sorry, my lady. I didn't see you there." I could feel the embarrassment building. I should have been paying better attention. "It isn't polite to be lurking in the shadows." "And what excuse do you have?" His voice was soft against the loud notes of the melody currently playing. It was a perfectly normal question that I couldn't give a stranger the answer to. Then again, he was just a stranger, so what if he thought I was crazy. "I um... well you see..." I tried to gather my thoughts but the word vomite fell out of my mouth before I could stop it. "Its just that I don't belong here. I can't even begin to understand why the King would invite the likes of me." His chuckle could be heard over the soothing notes, "the likes of you?" "A lone wolf I mean." I glanced over my shoulder to see the mask of a black sheep and a grin peering out from under it. "I'm just not used to being around others. It's not that I don't spend time with others, it's just... I mean I'm not used to being around these kinds of people." The stranger's laugh was far louder this time around. I am clearly making a fool of myself just as I feared. "And what kinds of people are here?" "Oh, I mean no offense." I looked at the King, wondering around the throngs of people. "I just mean I don't know how to act around people of such prestige." All traces of laughter fell from his lips. "How are we supposed to act around people of such prestige?" "Something we are not." I couldn't stop the thoughts running rampant in my mind. Memories I have long since suppressed. "I am terribly sorry, but I need to excuse myself." I didn't wait for a response and bolted towards one of the balcony doors. I needed fresh air, I needed room to breathe without all these eyes on me. The cool night air hit my face as I stepped onto the balcony, the sounds of the party muffled by the heavy doors behind me. I leaned against the railing, taking deep breaths to calm my racing heart. The garden below was illuminated by soft, twinkling lights, casting a serene glow over the meticulously manicured hedges and flowerbeds. I closed my eyes, trying to steady my thoughts. The encounter with the stranger had left me feeling even more out of place. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was an impostor in this world of elegance and power. "Are you alright?" a familiar voice asked, breaking through my thoughts. I turned to see Maxine standing in the doorway, her peacock mask slightly askew. She walked over to me, concern etched on her face. "I saw you rush out. What happened?" I sighed, leaning my head against the cool metal of the railing. "I just... I don't belong here, Max. I feel like everyone can see right through me." Maxine placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "You belong here just as much as anyone else. The king himself invited you, remember? There must be a reason for that." I nodded, but the doubt still lingered. "I just wish I knew what that reason was." Before Maxine could respond, the doors to the balcony opened again, and the stranger from earlier stepped out. He removed his black sheep mask, revealing a kind face with warm brown eyes. "I hope I'm not interrupting," he said, his voice gentle. Maxine raised an eyebrow, glancing between us. "I'll give you two some privacy," she said with a knowing smile before slipping back inside. The stranger approached, his expression sincere. "I didn't mean to upset you earlier. I do apologize." I sighed inwardly, "you should not feel the need to apologize. It is I who should be sorry. I spoke out of turn and ran off before being excused. I had hoped by coming here I could forget what it was like to be me for a night." He was silent for a moment, lost in his own train of thought. "Do you know why they have these parties every year?" "The king hosts the annual year-end celebration to honor the kingdom's unity, resilience, and prosperity. It's a time for the people to come together, reflect on the challenges and triumphs of the past year, and look forward to a future filled with hope and promise. The celebration also serves as a reminder of the strength and justice that King Alaric Thorne embodies, reinforcing the bond between the ruler and his subjects." He nodded, "that's part of it. But do you know the other reason?" I simply shook my head no. "I hear it is so he can find his mate. Someone he can share his heart with." I stifled a laugh, "finding a fated mate is near impossible. Most wolves go their whole lives without ever meeting their mate." "From what I understand, that is why the king has no queen by his side."
