Lila's world went dark as the bullet whizzed past her head. She felt Alex's grip on her hand tighten. "Down," he shouted, pulling Lila to the ground. They hit the dirt, and Lila's heart was racing. The helicopter's searchlight landed on them. Alex's eyes locked onto Lila's. "We have to move," he mouthed. Lila nodded, and they crawled through the underbrush. The helicopter's rotors were deafening. As they reached a small stream, Alex pulled Lila into the water. They waded downstream, the icy water numbing Lila's feet. The helicopter's searchlight scanned the area, but Lila and Alex stayed hidden. After what felt like an eternity, the helicopter flew away. Lila breathed a sigh of relief.
