Bass spotted Hodgins talking with two uniformed officers outside a set of large, metal, warehouse doors. The men had their backs turned away from the lake’s blue-green horizon. Opposite the men was a lake freighter moored at the dock. The boat’s red hull was only moderately down in the water, signifying a light load. The waves, which lapped at the sides of the vessel, were near soundless as Bass approached. The outer lake currents had little effect on the freighter’s stationary position at the dock. It stood solid in the water. Hodgins left the two officers and went over to the victim’s body where it lay on the concrete platform.
