—Day 7—A message slip was left on Bass’s desk the next morning. Liddy Lobok’s house had been burgled the previous evening. Liddy was in the hospital. Bass found no report filed on the case. He immediately phoned the investigating officer. Bass reached the man at home. “I haven’t typed up anything formal on it yet,” the officer said. “Read me your notes. What time did it happen and what was taken?” “Just a minute.” Bass could hear papers being shuffled while he listened. “We received a 911 call at four-twelve p.m. A burglary was in progress.
