26 They climbed the stairs, each lost in their own thoughts. Anne trailed one hand lightly on the polished wood banister, the other was held warmly in Duncan’s. He had taken the carafe of wine from her when she talked about how thirsty she was. He wanted her to be in her right mind when he took her to his rooms. At the top of the stairs, Anne glanced at the door to the room where she had spent her first night at Ballinderry. She smiled to herself at Duncan’s thought that she might end her life. Looking behind her, the door that led to the battlements was darkened, the wall sconces not lit. Her smile faded as she remembered his accusation that she could be part of the tragedies her brother had committed.
