14 Duncan looked from Anne’s face to her hand. He closed his mouth and ground his teeth. Plucking the material from her hand, he examined it more closely. “’Tis McCleary,” he made it a statement, but looked at her for confirmation. She nodded once. He sighed and tucked the scrap into the top of his boot. Looking at her, he grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet as he stood. “Anne, what happened between us—” Duncan began. She put her fingers to his lips to silence the apology she knew was there. Shaking her head, she said, “Nay, Duncan. ’Tis what we both wanted.
