Peggy opened her eyes. Not moving, she stared ahead dully. All around her was motion and sound, but none of it had form. As though she had been an insect to whom the acts of human beings must appear as acts of nature, she was incapable of comprehension. The second time she opened her eyes she saw the light going on and off, growing lighter and darker. This time she knew it was a candle, bowing and curtseying. Part of the jumble of sound resolved itself into the wind. The tree was going to come down. She had to hide. Where was Dickie?
