Interviews with science fiction authors are often dated by the time they are published and read. I have never felt that this situation should be detrimental to the value of the interview, if the interviewer has done his job. A good interview with an sf author is more historic preservation than news.
It must be admitted, however, that this interview with Larry Niven has been delayed in publication somewhat longer than usual. It was conducted at The World Fantasy Convention in Providence in 1979, and sold to Eternity Science Fiction shortly thereafter. But that magazine then died a lingering death, taking years to relinquish its backlog. It was done while Inferno was a recent memory and Dream Park was a work in progress.
