WARREN CAUGHT MATT’S pass, ran around three opponents, took the shot...and missed. The whistle blew, signaling the end of the game. They hit the locker room amidst good natured ribbing from the Queens team.
“What the hell, man?” Matt threw a towel in his direction. “You should’ve nailed that.”
“Brain freeze.”
“My ass. You’ve been distracted all night. Queens murdered us. Again. It’s embarrassing.” Warren stripped out of his sweaty shorts and strode to the showers with Matt behind him just as naked.
“I think I have a new potential.”
“Already? You swore after the hell Stace put you through—”
Whatever else he said was lost over the celebrating Queens team in the locker room and the whoosh of high-powered water.
“This one’s flown under the radar. Barnes told me about him a few weeks ago.”
“Not like her to miss one. She’s one of the best spotters we have. Who is it?”
“A family we should’ve kept an eye on but somehow they fell through the cracks. Remember that girl Barnes thought for sure would turn back in the seventies?”
“Yeah. She kept following up with the mother even after Jake told her to leave it alone.”
“That girl is now a woman and her son is probably one of us.”
Warren left out just how much woman Special Agent Noelle Catherine Briggs was. She was tall for a human woman, with long, brown curly hair. It had been held hostage in a ponytail the day he saw her, but he easily imagined it wild, free, spilling over her shoulders. Her eyes were a deep brown he could drown in, but it was her scent that stayed on his mind long after their first meet. On the surface, she smelled of fresh-brewed coffee. Underneath, her true scent was bright and citrusy like a California orange grove at harvest time.
“No s**t?”
Matt's question brought him back from daydreaming about the dark and lovely Agent Briggs.
“I met her this afternoon. There’s nothing wolfy about her, but Derek shows all signs of a transition about to hit fast and hard.”
He'd like to hit Agent Briggs fast and hard. His c**k stirred to attention and Warren turned the cold faucet all the way up. No sense getting all worked up about a human woman. They were never worth all the trouble they caused.
The guys ended their showers, dried off and dressed in street clothes.
“How you gonna get the boy away?”
“I dunno. His mother is a Fed. She's gonna be tough to convince.”
“Full moon’s in a few days. You don't have much time.”
“Don’t I know it?”
