Lance unlocked the door and nudged it open, his arms full with stacks of old files, photos, and handwritten notes. Ivy followed, balancing her own pile carefully, her brow furrowed with a mix of anticipation and exhaustion. Once inside, they both kicked off their shoes and set down the stacks on their worn coffee table, each pile towering and haphazardly leaning to one side. The silence that had marked their drive home settled in around them again, weighted with the mystery they were finally, truly unravelling. “Alright,” Lance sighed, collapsing onto the couch next to the stacks. He thumbed through a bundle of photos, stopping to glance up at Ivy. “Let’s divide and conquer?” She nodded, rubbing her hands together to shake off the chill of the early evening air. “I’ll start with the photos and the letters,” she said, her voice low but eager. “Maybe there’s something personal, something she missed—especially if she was afraid of whoever might be watching her.” “Smart,” Lance agreed, already leafing through the brittle papers in front of him. “I’ll tackle the official-looking documents and reports. Maybe there’s some kind of pattern in dates or names.” They dove in, each pulling a section from the piles, eyes scanning paper as quickly as they dared without missing a detail. For a while, the room filled with the rustling of paper, the occasional scratch of pen against notepad as they jotted down anything that felt important or out of place. But after a solid hour of sorting and reading, they’d barely made a dent, and Ivy’s eyes felt like they were blurring. Finally, she leaned back with a sigh, glancing over at Lance. “Alright,” she said, rubbing her temples. “Where are you at? Anything good?” “Funny you should ask,” Lance murmured, tapping a finger against one of the reports. “I kept seeing this word pop up—‘Dominion.’ It’s all over these, like Eliza thought it was the key to everything.” He rifled through the papers until he found the page he wanted, angling it so she could see. The word Dominion was scrawled in tight cursive at least a dozen times down the margin, like Eliza had been obsessively marking its significance. “Dominion?” Ivy echoed, her eyes narrowing. “I saw it, too—in the letters. She wasn’t writing directly about them, but it’s like... whoever she was communicating with, they’d mention Dominion in little ways, almost like it was just something you were supposed to know. Like it was just... there, in the shadows, a part of things.” Lance paused, the pieces clicking into place with a sudden clarity that made him sit up straighter. “Ivy—remember that journal we found in the abandoned library? The one when we first started looking into this story? That mentioned Dominion, too.” Her eyes widened. “You think this means... they’re real?” “That’s what I’m starting to think,” Lance said slowly, shaking his head as if he could hardly believe it himself. “At first, I just thought it was a paranoid fantasy. Some idea Eliza had latched onto, you know? I mean, we both heard the rumours. People always said there was some organisation lurking behind the scenes, but... no one had ever actually proven Dominion existed.” Ivy leaned forward, elbows on her knees, staring intently at him. “But if this is real—if Dominion actually exists—this goes way beyond Eliza’s personal secrets. This means we’re not just dealing with a cover-up or some old family scandal. This is...” “Bigger,” he finished, a flicker of worry darkening his eyes. “And it’s dangerous. We’re looking into something that’s designed to stay hidden. Eliza wasn’t the only one onto this. If she really did know something, it could explain everything—why she hid this under lock and key, why she was so paranoid.” The weight of the room shifted as a silent understanding settled between them. Ivy reached over, her fingers lightly brushing his arm, grounding him for a second. “Okay,” she said, voice steadier than she felt. “If Dominion is real, we need to tread carefully. This is going to change... everything. So we start here, piece by piece, until we figure out just what Dominion is—and what they’re capable of.” Lance met her gaze, determination mingling with the unease in his eyes. “Then let’s get back to work.” The hours passed in a blur, with Lance and Ivy sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, heads bent low over the heaps of papers and photos. The dim glow of the desk lamp cast long shadows across the living room, growing softer as the hours stretched on, the air heavy with the scent of old paper and dust. They barely spoke, only muttering to themselves or occasionally sharing a find—a name, a symbol, a strange date or scribbled message. The quiet intensity that fuelled their digging kept them sharp, but as night slid deeper into early morning, their minds grew fogged with exhaustion. At some point, Ivy’s head dropped onto her arm, too heavy to keep upright. Lance barely noticed until he, too, felt his eyes sag, his chin dipping down onto his chest. Neither of them fought the sleep that pulled them under. When they woke, it was to the soft golden light of early morning spilling through the blinds. Ivy blinked, slowly becoming aware of her surroundings—the chaos of notes scattered across the table and floor, Lance slouched beside her, rubbing his eyes with one hand. A familiar unease began to rise in her chest as the weight of their findings settled back on her shoulders. Lance looked at her, the same grim realisation crossing his face. They’d uncovered too much. Dominion wasn’t just a shadowy myth whispered about in the dark corners of libraries and lost journals. It was something real, and the deeper they dug, the more sinister it seemed. “God,” Ivy whispered, her voice barely audible, “we can’t do this on our own. There’s too much—too many names, too many connections we don’t understand.” Lance nodded slowly, casting a wary glance at the stacks of papers around them. “I know,” he said, his voice edged with worry. “But we can’t just bring someone in, either. If Dominion’s real, if they’re as powerful as they seem—anyone we talk to could be… you know… compromised. Or worse.” Ivy exhaled shakily, running her hands through her hair. “It’s just… I can’t shake the feeling that someone’s already watching us. Eliza was terrified, Lance. This paranoia—maybe it’s not paranoia at all. What if they already know we’re looking into this?” The silence between them thickened, and for a moment, Lance’s hand rested on hers, a brief, grounding touch. “We’ll have to be careful,” he said quietly. “As careful as we’ve ever been. But I don’t think we can turn back now, Ivy. Not after everything we’ve uncovered. There’s more at stake than just Eliza’s secrets. I need to know who Dominion is—and who’s part of it. If this is as big as we think it is… we have to know what their intentions are.” “And if they’re as dangerous as we’re starting to think,” Ivy added, meeting his eyes with a fierce determination, “we have to figure out how to stop them.” They shared a silent, sober nod, a pact forged in the quiet of the morning light. The path ahead was dangerous, shadowed by the weight of secrecy and the threat of a hidden enemy. But now, they had a mission: to uncover Dominion’s players, their purpose, and to stop them if they could. Lance cleared his throat, glancing around the living room at the scattered evidence that seemed almost to pulse with a life of its own. “We’ll go back to the library today. If there’s more in Eliza’s journal, anything that can give us leverage, we’ll find it.” “Right,” Ivy agreed, her voice calm but edged with the tension of everything they were carrying now. “And we stay low—no contact with anyone unless we’re absolutely sure. From now on, it’s just us.” They lingered for a moment, a sense of dread mixing with the thrill of what they might discover. And then, with the same silent determination, they both got up to start the day, knowing that the answers they sought lay somewhere in the shadows, waiting for them to unearth it—if Dominion didn’t stop them first.
