By the time I made my way to where they stood, Nicolette had left. I sidled up next to Tessa. I pretended to listen to Reverend Taylor’s homily, but I watched Tessa from the corner of my eye. She didn’t even glance at the stage. Instead, she texted someone, her nails flying across the small screen.
I turned towards her and said, “You were at the market today, weren’t you?”
