Chapter 14 - Priorities

1270 Words
----Kayden POV---- Of course, my mother forced me to take Leigh to the city, despite the fact that I didn’t want to and now I had to explain to Sheila, why we couldn’t spend the day together after all. I did not look forward to that conversation and as I where walking towards her place I tried going over what I was going to tell her. When I saw her standing in the doorway all my well-planned words disappeared into thin air, due to the fact that she was only wearing a thin and see-through nightgown. She crossed her arms and gave me an angry scowl. “Tell me it’s not true.” She said angrily and I stopped in front of her. “Depends on what it is, but we have to save it for later, because I can’t stay long, I’m afraid.” I told her and made my way into the room behind her. I was here to cancel our plans, but I also had to find the Royal ring, that I left here, the last time I was here. I couldn’t go to the city without it, as it was a symbol of my title. Not that the people didn’t know what the Crown prince looked like. “So, it is true. You are spending the day with that slut.” She hissed afterwards and I had to stop myself from not telling her that, Leigh wasn’t a slut. It would only make it worse. Especially because it made my wolf stir inside me. He would normally disappear completely, in the sense that I wasn’t able to sense him in my head, when Sheila was nearby. I always thought his disappearance where due to my strong feelings for her, but I was starting to doubt that. All because of the fact that he would be present and take over from time to time, when it came to Leigh. “My mother ordered me to do it. Said it was for the good of the people.” I answered honestly, but it didn’t help the situation. She narrowed her eyes, and the tension became noticeable. But it was for the good of the people. I had married Leigh, to get the help we needed for the people. A people, that were now thriving again and as much as I hated to say it, it was only because of people I disliked that my own people was still alive. So I had to do this for them. “Don’t want to hear it… You promised. You promised!” She screamed. “Ever since you married her you haven’t had time for me. Something you promised wouldn’t happen! I’m your Mate and not her! So why do I get the second place!?” She walked past me and into the other room. I hated seeing her like this and she was right. I did promise that Leigh wouldn’t come between us, but it was slowly happening. If I wanted this to work, I had to prove to her that she was my number one. That she was important. “I’ll do this and afterwards I’m all yours.” She looked me dead in the eyes. “No.” She followed it up with shaking her head. “No?” I gave her a puzzled look. I had to do this even if I didn’t want to. I did have a kingdom to consider too. “No. I want you here. With me. Now and not later. Let someone else take her. She gets to see the city and the people gets to see her. While you stay with me and show me that you care. You owe it after what happen yesterday.” She touched my arm. “I don’t want to lose you and definitely not to the likes of her, whose own family didn’t even want her.” She snapped. My eyes locked on to hers and my wolf started to stir again. Leigh’s family didn’t want her? That where news to me. “What do you mean by that? That her family didn’t want her?” I had to know the reason for this. Why someone didn’t want their own flesh and blood. As a Wolf family meant everything and this made me uncomfortable knowing they would cast her aside and my Wolf agreed. Sheila crossed her arms and gave me a puzzled look. “You didn’t know?” She quirked one of her perfect plucked brows. “Father did some digging and apparently, Leigh is Isaac and Aimil’s adopted daughter. Leigh was basically left on their doorstep with nothing but a ton of cash to whomever took her in. The Emperor and Empress kept her despite not wanting to, but what kind of people would they be if they tossed the girl aside. They just kept her around to act as a bargain chip and they saw and treated her as nothing more than a maid. Well less than a maid.” I lifted my head to glare at her, the anger rushing through my body and this time I couldn’t blame my Wolf. No, the anger was mine to. The mistreatment for Leigh, wife or not, it made me want to rip the entire Mebobet family and their staff apart. No one deserved such treatment, and I got the feeling that, what Sheila had told me was only the tip of the mistreatment. My anger reached new heights, fuel by my own emotions, as well as my Wolfs and I had a hard time reeling my Wolf back in. Sheila was the one who got the job done, with her questions though. “What’s going on? Why are you looking at me like that, Kayden?” Her voice made its way through my dark thoughts, and I started to calm down again. I hadn’t even realized that I’d had focused all my anger on her until her voice brought me back. My hands had balled up into fists and my Wolfs claws had pierced though the skin on my palms, drawing blood. I could feel the shift back to human taking over as I regained even more control. I closed my eyes and focused on steadying my breathing. “What made your father look into Leigh?” I asked as I open my eyes again. Sheila gave me a guilt-stricken glare and a hint of fear were coming of off her. Her cheeks flushed suddenly, like she knew I was able to scent the fear and she then waved her hands dismissively. “Father just wanted to know who you’d been married to. Wanted to make sure that the girl wasn’t a bad apple, that would hurt you. Hurt us.” Sheila was close with her father, and he would do anything to make sure she wouldn’t get hurt, but the way she said it, made me feel like her father didn’t trust my parents or me for that sake. If Leigh where a ‘bad apple’, my parents wouldn’t have agreed to the marriage. Another question where also begging to be acknowledge in my head, so I had to ask it. “Did he find her biological family then?” This time she looked taken aback by my question for a second, but she recovered fast. “Enough talking hot stuff.” And with that she wrapped her arms around me. “I wanna do something else.” She whispered and then she pressed her lips against mine. I let the questions about Leigh go and focused on my Mate for a change.
