Chapter 4: A Kiss in The Dark

225 Words
Days passed, but the mystery remained unsolved. The crimson-eyed vampire was still out there. Yet Nina found herself thinking less about the danger and more about Devin. About the way he watched her as if she were something precious. About the loneliness hidden behind his immortality. One night they stood on the hill overlooking Blackwood. Fog drifted through the streets below. “I’ve spent over a century avoiding people,” Devin said quietly. “Losing them hurts too much.” Nina turned to him. “Then why did you let me get close?” He looked at her with those silver eyes. “I didn’t mean to.” The confession stole her breath. Devin reached out slowly, giving her time to pull away. She didn’t. His fingers brushed her cheek, cool against her skin. “If you stay with me,” he whispered, “your life will never be ordinary again.” Nina smiled faintly. “It stopped being ordinary the moment you disappeared in that cemetery.” Devin laughed softly. Then he kissed her. The world seemed to fall silent—the fog, the wind, the distant church bells. There was only the moon above them and the impossible warmth she found in a vampire’s embrace. But somewhere in the darkness below, crimson eyes watched. And the real mystery of Blackwood was only beginning.
