Chapter 002

~Amara’s POV~ A month had passed since I awoke from a coma, but the world around me felt irrevocably altered. The sterile smell of antiseptic clung to me in the hospital room, and the beeping of the machines was a constant reminder of the life I had once known. Each day dragged on like a weight pressing down on my chest, suffocating my hope. I laid in the bed, staring at the stark white ceiling, wrestling with the remnants of my shattered life. The betrayal of those I once trusted weighed heavily on my heart, and the loss of one of my babies lingered in my thoughts like a relentless nightmare. The memories of the day I had learned of my betrayal flooded my mind, raw and painful. Ronan, the man I had believed to be my mate, had used me. He had sacrificed me and our child in his desperate attempt to save Sienna, my sister, who had never shown me a shred of kindness. The chilling realization that he had chosen Sienna over me felt like ice coursing through my veins. I remembered the moment I had confronted them in the pack house, the glint of indifference in Ronan’s eyes as he stood beside Sienna. Their union felt like a dagger in my chest, twisting painfully as Sienna had urged me to sign the divorce papers. “Just sign them, Amara,” Sienna had said, a fake sweetness coating her words. “Ronan and I have a life to build now. You wouldn’t want to stand in the way of that, would you?” The memory of my own trembling hands signing those papers was etched into my mind. Each stroke felt like a betrayal of its own, but I refused to show weakness. Instead, I had met Sienna’s gaze with defiance, my voice low and filled with fury. “This isn’t over. I will never forgive you, and one day, you will pay for what you’ve done.” Sienna’s laughter still echoed in my ears, a haunting reminder of my sister’s treachery. Ronan had not even flinched, his attention fixated solely on Sienna, as though I had ceased to exist. That day, a fire ignited within me, burning away the remnants of the naive girl I once was. I was no longer the victim; I was a survivor, and I would find a way to reclaim my life. As the days in the hospital dragged on, the sterile walls felt more suffocating than ever. The whispers of the staff and the steady rhythm of medical machines served as constant reminders of my pain. I needed to escape this place, to take control of my own destiny. The thought propelled me to swing my legs over the edge of the bed, feeling the cool floor beneath my feet. But just as I gathered the strength to rise, my phone rang, breaking the silence of my room. The caller ID read "Lisa,” my stepmother. I hesitated, memories of Lisa’s cold indifference flooding my mind. Lisa had always favored Sienna, treating me like an outsider in my own family. But something compelled me to answer the call. “Amara,” Lisa’s voice came through, breathless and urgent. “I need to talk to you. It’s important.” “What could you possibly want?” I replied, my voice flat, drained of emotion. I had no patience left for games. “It’s about your baby,” Lisa said quickly, her tone laced with urgency. My heart raced, each beat echoing in my ears. “What do you mean? What about my baby?” “One of your babies is alive,” Lisa hurriedly explained. “I know they told you the baby died, but it’s not true. One of your babies survived.” The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Hope surged through me like a tidal wave. “Where? Where is my baby?” “Meet me at the Moonlight Hotel,” Lisa said, urgency dripping from her words. “I’ll explain everything there.” Without hesitation, I jumped into action. I threw on my clothes, my heart pounding with a mix of excitement and dread. As I rushed out of the hospital, my mind was a whirlwind of emotions. Could it really be true? The drive to the Moonlight Hotel felt like an eternity. Each passing second heightened my anxiety, and my thoughts spiraled into what-ifs. What if Lisa was lying? What if her baby was truly gone? But as I pulled into the hotel parking lot, hope flared once more. I could hardly contain the mix of fear and excitement bubbling inside her. Stepping into the hotel lobby, I scanned the room, searching for Lisa. I spotted her near the elevators, looking more frazzled than ever. Lisa’s hands trembled as she glanced around nervously, clearly on edge. “Where is my baby?” I demanded as I approached her. Lisa’s eyes darted around the lobby, making sure no one was listening before she motioned for me to follow her to a more private area. My heart raced as we stepped into the elevator, the tension thick in the air. As the doors closed, the silence felt suffocating. “Lisa, just tell me where my baby is,” I urged, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll explain everything,” Lisa said, her voice low. “But you need to understand, this is serious.” When the elevator doors opened, Lisa led me down a long corridor to a room at the end. I felt a sense of dread wash over me as Lisa opened the door, revealing a scene that made my blood run cold. Inside the room, Melanie, Lisa’s younger daughter, sat on the bed, looking terrified. Standing over her was a man I didn’t recognize…a rogue, by the looks of him. His presence radiated danger, and I instinctively took a step back. “What is this?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest. “Amara, please,” Lisa said, stepping forward. “I can tell you where your baby is, but I need something from you in return.” My heart sank. Lisa was willing to sell me out to save Melanie. The betrayal cut deeper than I thought possible. “No,” I said, shaking my head. “I’m not doing this.” “Amara, please,” Melanie cried, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I don’t want anything bad to happen to me. We need your help.” “Help you?” I spat, anger boiling inside me as the force pushed me to land a slap on her face. “You’re both disgusting.” The rogue stepped closer, a cruel smirk spreading across his face. “You think you can just walk away?” he sneered, his tone low and threatening. At that moment, I felt her wolf surge to the forefront, a fierce growl escaping my lips as I took a protective stance. “Don’t you dare touch me,” I warned, my voice steady with newfound confidence. Without another word, I turned on my heel and bolted from the room, my heart racing as I fled down the corridor. I didn’t look back, until I reached the safety of the elevator, pressing the button for the first floor. The anger coursing through my veins ignited a fierce determination. I would not let Lisa or the rogue dictate my life. As the elevator doors opened, I stepped out into the lobby, my mind racing. I needed to think, to figure out my next move. I had come too far to let anyone else control my destiny. But just as I was about to push open the front doors, I collided with a solid figure. Stumbling back, I looked up to see a man standing before me. His presence was commanding, radiating strength and power. “Are you alright?” he asked, concern etched on his face. From his look…I met his gaze, with my heart pounding as I struggled to catch my breath. Something about him feels different and safe, and you instinctively know you can trust him. “Please, help me,” I whispered, my voice barely above a breath. Without hesitation, the man steps forward, extending his hand to me. “Come with me. We need to get you out of here.” I nodded, feeling a rush of gratitude as I took his hand. Together, we step into the unknown, leaving the pain of betrayal behind us. For the first time in weeks, a flicker of hope ignited within me, and I almost believed that I might still find my way back to the life I once dreamed of, a life with my baby. As the two of us left the hotel, I knew this was just the beginning of a journey filled with challenges. But I also know that I was no longer alone. With each step, I felt the weight of my past slowly begin to lift, replaced by the determination to fight for the only family I still have, no matter the cost. The stranger leads me down the street, and I can’t help but steal glances at him. He’s tall, with dark hair and intense eyes that seem to see right through me. There’s an air of confidence about him, and for the first time since my world crumbled, I feel a sense of safety. “Who are you? Why did you help”, I finally managed to ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
