Chapter 4: Brown Fur

2011 Words
Now that he's in a safe environment, it was now the time to remove the horn from the rabbit and create his arsenal. Sai started by painstakingly sharpening the rabbit's horn. He even carved it into the shape of a diamond so it can perfectly fit into the pole. After that, he wrapped it in the rope made from the rabbit's pelt to secure everything in place. Ping! [You have created -Rabbit Horn Spear-] [Rabbit Horn Spear] --- Rank: Common 3 Dmg: 12 --- Ping!   [You now have learned the Ability -Weapon Craft-] "Huh, I wonder what rank of weapons can I create" Sai raised his index finger and pointed at the [Weapon Craft] panel. By doing this, he can see the expanded details of the ability. [Weapon Craft: Create items used for combat using different materials] [Weapon Craft Proficiency: Low (You can efficiently create Weapons up to the rank of Common 10)] Weapons are ranked from Poor, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. These ranks can be further separated into values from 1 to 10 depending on the material quality and the effects the weapon has. The weapon that Sai had created was just an ordinary pole with a horn attached to it. However, the rank it can end up with depends on the proficiency of the Crafter. Right now, Common 3 was the best he can make with the materials he had on hand.   In his previous life, Surdeis wasn't much of a crafter because everything he needed was handed down to him. He thanked his previous self because if he didn't at least learn the basics, he would have much more trouble now. Sai observed his crafted weapon. 'This is definitely better than the Cheap Spear. Should I use the Mana Stone now?' He contemplated before deciding to put it on for a later time. Since he had killed a bunch of Horned Rabbits, he has plenty of materials to craft other weapons. He had learned his lesson from earlier. He would create something that would let him hunt more advantageously. Sai spent the remainder of his day making all sorts of weapons for different circumstances. He made a bow, a couple of arrows, and a pair of daggers.   "I should make some basic protection, too." Ping! [You have created -Horned Rabbit Bracers-] [Horned Rabbit Bracers] --- Grade: Common 1 Defense: 3 --- Ping! [You have learned the ability -Armor Craft-] Ping! [You have created -Horned Rabbit Shin Guards-] [Horned Rabbit Shin Guards] --- Grade: Common 3 Defense: 7 --- '...It's better than nothing.'   Sol came back with a Rabbit Stew and rabbit skewers when he saw the youth to not only manage to create weapon but also armor too.   'What the heck happened to this boy?' .... Sai had gone to bed first after they had finished their supper, leaving the husband and wife at the table   "Julie, I feel like there is something wrong with Sai. Something is different about him..."(Sol)   "I know what you mean"(Julie)   Julie said with a complicated expression on her face. She closed her eyes as if she was in deep thought.   "So, it isn't just me. What do you think happened to him"?   Julie opened her eyes and looked at Sol with an expression that seemed she would show a revelation.   "Our boy..."   Sol leaned his head in anticipation.   "...our boy is a genius! Finally, his skills showed! I can only feel proud of him as his mother."   Julie said proudly with her chest puffed up. Sol, on the other hand just gave up and said.   "Yeah... maybe you're right. I'm just overthinking things..."   Julie then gave him a solemn look.   "Sol, I know what you're thinking. Everything Sai has been doing since he woke up is absurd."   She looked at the boy's room then continued   "But maybe after his long sleep, the mana finally became stable and we get to witness him do stuff he had never done before."   Julie stared at the starry night sky; her words filled with emotion   "I believe in our boy, his birth itself was a miracle. If my mana and yours weren't different then this wouldn't have..."(Julie)   Sol hugged Julie, consoling her as she started to tear up.   Hybrids are very rare not only because reproducing with another race was considered taboo but the mana must also be at sync with each other. In the rare chance that the child survives, it's body would be weak and the lifespan would be incredibly short. ... "You're an incredible man Mr. Surdeis. I feel like the me in this body will soon be gone. Please, take care of them in my stead. This is my last wish..." .... Sai woke up with tears in his eyes. He recalled someone talking to him in his dream.   'I promise.'   He said inwardly and somehow this body felt a sense of relief. Sai understood this boy because he too wished the same. He can only show his respect by honoring its wish. Soon the mana disappeared completely.   Sai woke up refreshed. His bruises had healed quickly thanks to the herbs placed by Julie. "Oh! I still haven't checked my new stats!" He thought up the word 'Status' and a large screen filled with information filled his view. [Name: Saitori Gin Level: 2 Status: Awakened Race: Human-Demon Class: NA Subclass: NA Title: NA Base Stats: Strength: Lowest [Points for Increase: 3]     Speed: Lowest [Points for Increase: 3]     Intelligence: Very Low [Points for Increase: 5] Vitality: Lowest [Points for Increase: 3]    Dexterity: Very Low [Points for Increase: 5]    Luck: Very Low [Points for Increase: 5]     Available Stat Points: 5 Competency: Abilities: [Staff Novice] [Scythe Novice] [Trapping Novice] [Spear Novice] [Weapon Crafting] [Armor Crafting] Skills: [Mana Sense] [Leap] [Weapon Enhance: Ignite] Available Competency Points: 1 Unique Abilities: ▪Photographic Reflex - You can imitate any moves you have seen. Instantly learn a Skill or Ability after Observing. ▪???¿¿¿ Race Bonus: ▪Demon blood: Demon blood flows in you. Higher stat increase when levelling up. Mana pool Increase. Exp necessary to level up is drastically high. ▪Inherited Curse: Cannot undergo Ascension (Status: Nulled)] For a level 2, the Abilities and Skills he has are far above anyone at his level. This sort of makes up for his extremely low stats. However, '5 Stat points?!" A level up usually gave a consistent 3 stat points only, however this time he gained two more. 'Demon blood...' Sai thought to himself. Maybe it was this unique blood that gave him extra points to make himself stronger. 'Harder to level up but more stat points. Not bad, not bad.' He allotted 3 points to Strength, ranking it up from [Lowest] to [Very Low]. This would let him carry more items, and of course, be stronger in combat as well. As for the remaining 2, he used it all on Vitality so he would last a bit longer during combat. Sai was satisfied. Although he still had a long way to go, seeing his progress from a day of hunting was extremely rewarding. With that, he stood up and did some flexibility stretches. Afterwards he started doing pushups, squats, and other physical training. This body is still weak. Leveling up might be good but forging the body the old fashion way is still an effective method in raising the base stats. … After Sai had filled his stomach, he picked up his new equipment and went to the grasslands to hunt. As he was on his way to one of the traps he had set yesterday, he saw his mortal enemy.   '...horned rabbit.'   Sai took a bow and arrow and aimed it at the horned rabbit eating wild vegetation. He closed one of his eyes and directed his mana on the pupil that was focusing on the Horned Rabbit. Ping! [You Have Learned the Skill -Focus Sight-!] [Focus Sight: A Skill that enhances your vision.]   Now that he has [Focus Sight], his eyes can now zoom in on the rabbit, allowing him to much more accurately see his prey. He nocked the arrow and directed mana towards his fingertips. [Weapon Enhance: Ignite] [Fire Dmg +5]   After seeing the arrow tip burning, he released it. Ping! [You have learned the Skill -Flaming Arrow-!] Shwif [Critical Hit!] Bullseye. With his previous lifetime experience of holding the bow and the [Focus Sight] skill, it was only natural that his aim would be dead-on. With a precise attack aiming at the vitals enhanced by a skill, the arrow dug down to the Horned Rabbit's hind legs. Ping! [You have learned the Ability -Archery Novice-!] His prey tried to run away but Sai nocked another arrow and aimed it at the rabbit once more. He repeated this again until finally killing the helpless creature.   [You Have Killed Lvl. 1 Horned Rabbit!] [You Have Earned 13 Exp points] Sai buried the rabbit in leaves on a shallow hole he had dug. Chewing a Gundi root that helped recover mana, he proceeded to lay down traps around the grasslands. He also didn't forget to kill every Horned Rabbit he came across with. This was his revenge from the harsh battle he had yesterday. Poor rabbits. .... Stab   Sai used his new Rabbit Spear to stab a Wild Boar that was stuck on a bigger trap he had set. Now, hunting was way much easier than yesterday.   Ping! [You Have Killed Lvl. 2 Wild Boar!] [You have gained 22 Exp Points] ... Sai was quite happy with the results from today. Although he didn't level up yet, Lvl. 3 was just 1 or 2 creatures away. He decided to gather all his hunt at his home so he can craft better weapons. As Sai was dragging two dead rabbits behind him, he heard a lively high-pitched voice calling him.   "Sai!!"   He saw a beautiful young girl dressed in a shrine ceremonial outfit running towards his direction. Her eyes grew wide after seeing the two dead rabbits being dragged by the skinny youth.   "Did you kill those by yourself?!"   "Yeah."   Rei's jaw dropped.   "H-How?"   Sai then motioned him nocking an arrow then releasing it. She studied the dead rabbits and saw a single arrow wound at the neck. These rabbits died in a single hit.   "Wow. Uhm but It looks like you need some help, want me to lend you a hand?"   He accepted her help, Rei carried one of the rabbits as they went to Sai's home.   Sai noticed that Rei had been looking at him for quite some time now.   "Uhm. Is there something on my face?"   "No... But, did you grow taller since I last saw you?"   Rei said with a confused sheepish smile.   "We've brought it all the way here, what are we going to do with these?"   "Can we sell this at the marketplace?"   "Yup! Ill accompany you if you want. But the marketplace is a half day horse ride away, want to go to the local peddler instead?"   Sai's family currently lived in an abandoned plot of land given to them by Rei's father who was an influential figure. The land was outside the border of the nearest lord's domain   "Thank you. Let's get the rest before we go"   Rei's eyebrows raised when she heard that Sai had killed more rabbits alone. She was even more shocked after finding out that he had also killed a Wild Boar by himself.   They also gathered whatever herbs and roots they found along their way.   'Archery, trapping, gathering. Is he aiming to be a hunter?' (Rei)   As they were picking up the dead wild boar, Sai picked up a presence.   'The mother boar'   Luckily, the boar he had killed earlier was just a youngling. But that also meant that he is now susceptible to a Mother Boar attack. Stealthily, he took his bow and became vigilant without informing Rei. Maybe it was his imagination but it was better to be sure. Mother Boars are ferocious creatures that even tenured adventurers are wary of.   Rustle Shwif!   Without hesitation Sai shot an arrow at the ground near the bushes where the rustling sound came. Rei became alert upon hearing an arrow cut through the air.   Hearing no more movements, Sai signaled the confused Rei to stay as he went to investigate the bushes. He pushed the leaves out of the way, but instead of a large dark brown body, he saw something else. It had seemed to be collapsed as it lied face-down on the ground. It also had fur. But it was tan, not the color of a Mother Boar. Moreover, its body was also shaped like a human not older than him.   Although he can't see what the creature looks like, had a clue on what it was.   'A Beastman.'
