Chapter six

RITA SHOCKED ME As we walked out of the library, the warm sunlight cast a gentle glow over the campus. Rita and I strolled side by side, our footsteps synchronizing. Suddenly, Rita's hand brushed against mine, sending a spark of electricity through me. She didn't pull away. "Reuben," Rita said softly, her voice barely audible over the chirping birds. I turned to her, curiosity etched on my face. Rita's eyes locked onto mine, her gaze intense. "I have something to tell you." My heart skipped a beat. What could she want to say? We stopped beneath a blooming oak tree, its leaves rustling in the breeze. Rita's hands trembled as she took mine. "Alex, from the moment I met you, I knew you were special," Rita began, her voice trembling. "These past few months, I've fallen deeper in love with you." My pulse quickened. "I love the way you make me laugh, the way you challenge me to be my best self, the way we read together," Rita continued. "Your kindness, your compassion... it's all so captivating." Rita's eyes shone with sincerity. "I was scared to admit my feelings, fearing it might ruin our friendship," Rita confessed. "But I couldn't keep it inside anymore." My heart soared. "Rita, I—" I started. "Let me finish," she whispered. "I know I've made mistakes in the past," Rita said, her voice laced with vulnerability. "But being with you makes me want to be a better person. I promise to always support and love you." Rita's words poured into my soul like sunlight. I took a deep breath, my heart overflowing. "Rita, I love you too," I said, the words tumbling out. Rita's face lit up with joy. In that moment, everything felt right.
