The crowns trial begin

The palace did not sleep that night. Whispers moved through the corridors like poison—fast, invisible, impossible to stop. Princess Lyra Voss had returned. And with her return, the balance of the entire kingdom had shifted. Inside the royal council chamber, Prince Adrian Vale stood alone before the throne. For the first time in years… he felt watched by more than just nobles. He felt judged. Behind him, the Chancellor’s voice broke the silence. “The council has reached a decision.” Adrian didn’t turn. He already knew it would not be simple. The Chancellor continued carefully, as if every word could start a war. “The existence of three claimants to the crown prince’s bond cannot be ignored.” A pause. “Therefore… a royal trial will be held.” That made Adrian finally turn slightly. A trial. Not of law. But of power. Elena stood at the side of the chamber, expression unreadable but tense. Isabella remained composed, though her eyes were sharper than before. And Lyra… Lyra looked almost calm. Like she had been waiting for this. The Chancellor lifted a sealed scroll. “The Crown’s Trial of Claimants will determine who stands beside the future king.” A murmur spread instantly. Elena frowned. “This is madness.” Isabella’s voice was quiet. “This is control.” Lyra gave a faint smile. “This is inevitable.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “This ends now,” he said firmly. But the Chancellor shook his head. “It cannot end, Your Highness. Not anymore.” He stepped forward. “The kingdom is divided. The nobles are unsettled. The crown is unstable.” A pause. “And you are the cause.” Silence fell like a blade. Adrian’s eyes darkened slightly. The Chancellor raised the scroll higher. “The trial will begin at dawn.” Elena turned sharply. “And what exactly is this trial?” The Chancellor hesitated. Then answered. “Three tests.” A pause. “Loyalty. Endurance. And truth.” Isabella’s eyes narrowed slightly. “And the winner?” The Chancellor looked at Adrian. “The winner becomes your lawful partner.” A heavier silence followed. Then Lyra spoke softly. “And the others?” The Chancellor’s voice lowered. “Removed from the palace permanently.” Elena’s breath caught slightly. Even Isabella didn’t speak for a moment. Adrian’s expression darkened. “You are turning people into prizes,” he said coldly. The Chancellor didn’t flinch. “I am protecting the throne.” Lyra tilted her head slightly. “No,” she said quietly. “You are choosing chaos and calling it order.” The chamber went silent again. Adrian stepped forward slowly. “I refuse this trial.” The Chancellor bowed his head slightly. “Refusal is not permitted.” That single sentence changed the air completely. Elena looked at Adrian now, really looked at him. Isabella noticed it too. Lyra smiled faintly. “You still think you have control here,” she said softly. Adrian turned toward her sharply. “I don’t need control to stop this.” Lyra stepped forward just one pace. And lowered her voice. “Then stop it,” she whispered. A pause. “Unless you’re afraid of what the truth might choose.” That hit deeper than intended. Adrian didn’t respond. Because for the first time… He wasn’t sure what the truth was anymore. A loud horn sounded across the palace grounds. Dawn had arrived early. The trial had already begun. The Chancellor’s final words echoed through the chamber. “The Crown’s Trial of Claimants… has commenced.” And outside the chamber doors— The palace gates began to open.
