Chapter 44: LaurenKayla’s excited chatter on the way home from the airport helped Lauren push aside memories of the last few days, days filled with intimacy with Silke made all the more intense by their time running short. Contrary to her usual feelings, Lauren was relieved to see Silke’s car was not in the driveway, unable to help dreading having her two worlds collide. But she could not hold off reality forever. She squared her shoulders and opened the front door as Kayla continued her stream of conversation.
“Where’s Butterscotch? Here boy! Mommy’s home!” Kayla looked frantically around the room, a worried look on her face. “Mom? Butterscotch didn’t…”
“He’s fine, honey. Just a little hard-of-hearing. He’s probably on Silke’s bed, where he spends most of his time.”
Kayla frowned then.
