Alright, I've decided I'm going to drink this poisonous juice.
What are you talking about? You've gone crazy—this isn't a game, Bai-Luna. This is poison. If you drink it, you'll die, Xi-Xiao said angrily.
I smiled, took the glass of juice from Xi-Xiao's hands. "Alright, if my life has to be taken for me to prove my innocence, then I'll do it." I said, looking at Shen-Shauoa.
When I held the glass of juice, it was cold, as if it had just been taken out of the fridge a short while ago.
I looked at the juice, then at Xi-Xiao. There was fear in his eyes—the same fear you see in a deceiver's eyes when they're afraid their truth is about to be exposed. I smiled at Xi-Xiao and said, "Look, who's the real one? Me, or you?"
Shen-Shauoa was looking at me; his eyes burned with a fire that had once burned in my heart when I was betrayed by someone close. In his eyes now was hatred or anger—I had to find out.
Holding a glass in Xi-Xiao hand's never makes a lie turn into the truth. Shen-Shauoa said angrily, "How long are you going to stand there? If you have the guts, drink this juice."
I looked into Shen-Shauoa's eyes and saw a fire that could burn anyone, but compared to the fire in my heart, his fire was nothing.
The gun's muzzle was still pressed against my forehead. The hatred in his eyes was as if I were not a human being but some kind of insect. "If you want to kill me, then what's the matter—don't you have the courage to drink it? If you don't, then leave and go sit outside in the rain on your knees, waiting for my forgiveness until I forgive you. Don't get up from your knees. If you don't have the courage to drink the juice, then you can do that."
I looked at Shen-Shauoa and said, "I will drink this juice."
Then Shen growled, "Drink!"
I looked at Xi-Xiao. She was pretending to cry, as if she were very worried about me, but for a moment I saw a glint of victory in her eyes.
I realized… she was just acting. I said angrily, "I've been acting for ten years, and this girl is acting in front of me. It seems she thinks she's the perfect actor." I looked at Dr. Shu-Jen, who was standing off to one side watching everything as if he were observing it all. I drank the juice. Shen-Shauoa was staring at me in astonishment. A minute passed, then two, then five—nothing happened.
There was no poison in that juice. I looked at Shen-Shauoa and said, "It was all a drama. It was just a way to push me into the mouth of death. This plan is Miss Xi-Xiao's, Mr. Shen-Shauoa."
Xi-Xiao started acting innocent again, but I was getting bored of the same old drama. I took a deep breath and tossed the glass to the side. Everyone watched in surprise.
Xi-Xiao shouted, "What is this impudence, Bai-Luna?" I ignored her and said, "I'm going to bed. I'm heading to my room. Bye."
"No, wait, Bai-Luna!" Shu-Jen's voice echoed through the room, but I didn't care.
"You've drunk poison! Wait!" Shu-Jen said.
"Huh! 'So?' I tilted my head and looked into Shen's eyes. Then, looking at Shu-Jen, I said, 'Where's your poison? I'm still breathing.'"
Shen lowered the gun slightly. His face was tense. He turned to look at Xi-Xiao. "Xi-Xiao... didn't you say that juice was poisoned?" Shu-Jen quickly said, "Yes, you're the one who said Bai-Luna put poison in the juice."
"I-I... Shen, maybe the glasses were switched! Or maybe the poison takes a while to work!" Xi-Xiao said, stammering and crying.
I let out a loud, cold laugh. "A misunderstanding drama? Wow, nice acting. You wanted to frame me as the killer to get rid of me. Shen, your enemy isn't me, it's your 'innocent' little girl, Xi-Xiao, who wants to make you a murderer and have me killed by your own hands. You're really so stupid, haha!!"
"Shut up!" Shen yelled, but there was no longer the same conviction in his voice.
Meanwhile, Doctor Shu-Jen came closer to me. He took my hand, his cold fingers on my pulse. His face was so close to mine that I could feel his rapid breaths. He put on that innocent doctor's face, but there was a strange gleam in his eyes—as if he'd discovered my secret.
He leaned in close to my ear and whispered so softly that only I could hear:
"You knew from the start that the juice was clean… didn't you? You're quite a deep actress, Bai-Luna.
I trembled a little. This doctor was truly a sea that made me feel my personality changing. I jerked my hand back.
"Shen," I said in a loud voice, "I'm tired. If you want to kill me, just shoot, or let me go back to my room. I don't have time for your 'Heroine' drama." Okay, stop it now. Shen-Shauoa put the gun in his pocket. He signaled to the guards. "Take her to the room upstairs and lock it from the outside. She won't leave this house until I find out for sure if there was poison in the juice or not."
The guards grabbed me, but I pushed them away. "I can go by myself."
As I left, I turned to look back. Shen was glaring at me angrily, but Shu-Jen... he was still standing there, smiling, twirling a shard of glass in his doctor's ashtray.
I realized... It might be easy to escape the Mafia King Shen-Shauoa, but this mysterious Doctor Shu-Jen is going to be my real problem. He gave me a strange signal, but I couldn't figure out if the doctor was on my side or the enemy...
