Chapter 9: A New Threat Rises

897 Words
Lena’s POV The night air carried whispers of war. I stood at the edge of the encampment, listening to the rustling leaves and the distant howls that echoed through the mountains. The tension in the air was undeniable. Something was shifting in the world of wolves, and I could feel it in my bones. “The Shadowfang Pack is falling apart,” Raven murmured beside me, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. “Killian’s at war. Word is, another pack has challenged him. Blood Moon, I think.” Killian. His name still had the power to stir something dangerous inside me, but I crushed it beneath the weight of everything that had come after. He had chosen his path, and I had carved my own. Raven turned to me, her golden eyes sharp. “That’s not the only thing. Some of the rogues we took in mentioned something else.” She hesitated before adding, “He’s looking for you.” My breath caught, but I forced my face to remain impassive. “Why?” “That’s the question, isn’t it?” Raven shrugged. “Maybe he finally realized what he threw away.” Doubt flickered in my chest. If Killian was searching for me, it wasn’t because of regret. He had made his choice years ago. The only thing that made sense was that he wanted something from me, and that was far more dangerous than the thought of him suddenly missing me. I pressed a hand to the hilt of my blade, its familiar weight grounding me. “It doesn’t matter. If he comes, we’ll be ready.” Raven smirked. “Damn right we will.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Gathering Storm By the time I returned to my tent, the weight of the news still lingered in my chest. Noah was fast asleep on his cot, his dark lashes resting against his cheeks, his small body curled beneath a thick blanket. He was growing stronger every day, his sharp mind already picking up the skills I had worked hard to teach him. Killian would never know him. I made peace with that a long time ago. I brushed my fingers through Noah’s hair, my heart aching with the fierce love I felt for him. He was the reason I had built this life, the reason I had become something more than the girl Killian Blackwood had thrown away. And now, I have an army of my own. A pack without borders. A force that no longer feared the rule of Alphas. Yet the idea of war creeping closer to our doorstep sent unease skittering down my spine. I wouldn’t let it touch my son. I wouldn’t let it tear apart the life I had fought so hard to build. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killian’s POV The scent of blood was thick in the air. I stood over the fallen body of an enemy warrior, his lifeless eyes staring blankly at the sky. Around me, the battlefield was littered with the wounded and the dead. My pack fought with the fury of wolves cornered, but the Blood Moon Pack was relentless. Their Alpha, Darius, had been planning this for months, chipping away at my borders, turning my allies against me. “Alpha,” Marcus, my Beta, approached, his expression grim. “The eastern border has fallen. We lost two more outposts.” I clenched my jaw. “Darius is getting bolder.” Marcus hesitated, then added, “There’s something else. Some of the rogues captured in the last raid mentioned her.” I didn’t have to ask who he meant. There was only one ‘her’ that would cause this shift in my chest, this raw, unspoken tension that I refused to acknowledge. Lena. I hadn’t spoken her name in years, but it still haunted me. The mate I had rejected. The woman I had turned my back on. I had thought she was gone forever, lost to the wilds. But now, she had resurfaced in the most unexpected way. “She’s leading a rogue faction,” Marcus continued. “Not just any faction—one of the strongest ones. They call her the Rogue Queen.” A slow, dangerous smile tugged at my lips. Lena, a queen? The thought was almost laughable, except for the part where it made sense. I had known she was strong, but I had underestimated her. And now, she had built something of her own, something that even Alphas whispered about. “Where is she?” I asked. Marcus hesitated. “We don’t know yet. But the Blood Moon Pack might.” I exhaled sharply. If Darius got to Lena before I did, there was no telling what he would do. He wouldn’t just want her for her power—he’d want to break her, use her against me. A low growl rumbled in my chest. I had let her go once. I wouldn’t make that mistake again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lena’s POV The storm was coming. I could feel it in the way the air crackled, in the way the wolves who had sought refuge under my leadership grew restless. War was reaching us, whether we wanted it or not. I tightened my grip on my blade and exhaled slowly. Whatever came next, I would face it head-on. For my pack. For my son. For the past, I would never let it haunt me again.
