Chapter 15: Pack Tensions Rise

824 Words
Lena’s POV The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a blade. Everywhere I turned, eyes followed me—some filled with curiosity, others with barely restrained hostility. The Shadowfang Pack had been my home once, but now, I was nothing more than an intruder in their eyes. The moment Killian brought me back, the pack was thrown into turmoil. Whispers followed me wherever I went. Some called me a traitor. Others questioned why their Alpha had welcomed me back after five years. “Why is she here?” one warrior muttered as I passed. “She abandoned us. She doesn’t deserve to be among us again.” “She’s dangerous,” another hissed. “A rogue queen? She’s not one of us anymore.” I ignored them, keeping my head high, but deep inside, I knew this wouldn’t be an easy battle. I had spent years building a new life, forging my own path. Now, I had returned to the very place that had once cast me out, and I refused to cower under their judgment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Killian’s Struggle Killian stood in the center of the pack’s gathering hall, his face a mask of control, but I could see the weight pressing down on him. He had spent years leading this pack, strengthening it, ruling it with unshakable authority. And yet, my return had thrown everything off balance. “She is under my protection,” he announced, his voice ringing out over the murmuring crowd. “She is my mate. She is Noah’s mother. And she will not be harmed.” A wave of tension rippled through the gathered wolves. The mention of Noah had only made things more complicated. The pack had been blindsided by the existence of Killian’s son, a child born outside their ranks, raised among rogues. “An Alpha heir raised among rogues?” One elder stepped forward, his face lined with disapproval. “What kind of future does that promise our pack?” Killian’s silver eyes darkened. “His blood is Shadowfang. That is all that matters.” “It’s not that simple,” another voice argued. “She left us. She abandoned the pack, abandoned you. And now you welcome her back as if nothing happened?” “I did what I had to do,” I said coldly, stepping beside Killian. “None of you know what I endured. None of you know what it took for me to survive.” Murmurs spread through the crowd, some wavering in their hatred, others standing firm in their resentment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lena’s Challenge I turned to face them all, my voice steady but laced with iron. “I am not the same girl who left this pack. I have fought, I have bled, and I have built something that no one could take from me. I am not here to beg for acceptance. I am here because war is coming. And whether you like it or not, you will need me.” A few warriors exchanged uneasy glances, their loyalty torn between their Alpha and the distrust ingrained in them over the years. Some, I could tell, wanted to challenge Killian’s decision outright. Others, perhaps, were beginning to realize the truth in my words. A low growl came from the back of the hall. Gareth, one of the senior warriors, stepped forward. His amber eyes burned with contempt. “You expect us to trust you again after you turned your back on us? What’s stopping you from leaving again when things get hard?” I met his gaze head-on. “Because I have something worth fighting for. And whether you trust me or not, I will fight for this pack. I will fight for Noah.” The mention of my son sent another ripple of unease through the pack. He was an innocent caught in the midst of this conflict, and even those who resented me couldn’t deny that he was Killian’s blood. A sharp, bitter laugh came from the back. “And what if she betrays us again?” a she-wolf sneered. “She lived with rogues for years. How do we know she hasn’t brought danger to our doorstep?” Killian’s gaze flickered toward me, unreadable, but I could sense the approval hidden beneath his carefully composed expression. He knew I wouldn’t back down. I took a slow step forward, my voice carrying over the murmurs. “If I wanted to destroy this pack, I would have done it already.” My words sent a hush through the crowd. “But I didn’t. I returned because I know what’s coming. And if you let your hatred blind you, you’ll never survive it.” An uneasy silence stretched between us and the pack. Some of them were beginning to see reason. Others, I knew, would never accept me. But I didn’t need their approval. I only needed them to understand one thing. I wasn’t leaving.
