Rafael's POV
It began with a name.
Project Orchid.
A term Elias had uttered before vanishing off the grid five years earlier. A ghost project buried under a heap of cyber ash—erased, classified and ostensibly reduced to a smoldering pile of nothing in a lab fire. And now it was in Rafael's face, he hadn't slept. Not since he'd watched Celeste come out of that hospital corridor with their daughter and disappear again. His ex-wife, the woman he'd grieved. The one who reopened every wound he thought had healed the day she returned but nothing was as bad as this.
He sat by himself in his Geneva penthouse suite and the drapes shut out the blackness. The only soft glow was from his laptop screen and on the screen, decrypted fragments of a secret project were gradually reconstituting like spirits back to complete their fragmented tale.
"Come on" he growled typing a flurry of fingers.
Code lines blazed across the screen. Elias had written them in inescapable backdoor codes, firewalls within firewalls but Rafael had cracked stronger systems for less money. This was not business anymore. This was reality and the reality reeked old blood, old deceptions and perfume.
He found it and report stamped:
PROJECT ORCHID
BioNeuroSync Protocol | Clearance Level: 9
Lead Consultant: Celeste Aragon-StoneStatus: Terminated
Notes: Subject AM-1A—Emotion-Adaptive Intelligence
Rafael looked.
Celeste had been responsible for this?
It didn't compute. She'd always been a prodigy f**k, he adored her for that intelligent mind but she never told him about this. Never griped about Orchid and never spoke about black-budget missions.
He poked through video records.
Security cam captures showed a subterranean laboratory, white walls and illuminated monitors. There she was, Celeste in a white lab coat, hair pulled back and her voice commanding a digital assistant.
Other than her, Elias. Younger, sharper-eyed watching a neural map throb on the screen in rhythm with something, no someone.
There was a five-year-old girl in total center of the room, hooked up to a halo of biometric sensors. Her eyes traced the AI that appeared to dance before her. She wasn't reacting to it, it was reacting to her.Rafael moved forward "What in the"
The audio came through.
"Initiate empathy sync" Celeste's voice said.
"Beginning synchronization" Elias confirmed.
And then the girl—AM-1A—whispered a word that curled Rafael's stomach.
"Daddy"
Rafael froze.
The child on-screen shared Celeste's eyes. His cheekbones, her gentle jaw and Amelia's voice.
He pressed pause.
The date tag on the file was March 5th, Year -5.
Before Amelia was born.
Except now he knew that was not true. Amelia was not born in a hospital.
She was made.
He stood abruptly, the chair screeching across the marble floor. Grabbing his phone, he dialed one of his private security assets.
“Get me everything on StoneTech’s last five years of R&D. Scrub all aliases and pull anything connected to Project Orchid.”
“Already done sir” came the gruff reply “But you’ll want to hear this, Orchid’s been flagged on the dark web. Someone’s auctioning its base code.”
“What?”
"We followed the ping to a New York masked bidder. Their handle was shared by an outlaw team in the black bio-defense market."
"Who's the seller?"
"They called themselves The Widow Protocol. No trace online, no starting point, just a satellite reflection off Oregon."
He felt chilled to the core.
Celeste.
Either the seller or soon to be hunted.
"Double protection on my daughter. Discreetly ifanyone gets near her within a mile, i want them eliminated."
"Yes sir."
He hung up the call and went back to the screen, calling up the last recovered file.
A logbook entry, written in Celeste's hand:
March 6.
AM-1A's predictive patterning is taking over basic input commands. The AI is no longer responding to human inputs—it's forecasting them.
She sleeps in code. She absorbs memory like osmosis. Elias is frantic but i can see now that this is what the future of consciousness is like.
But i'm afraid. Not of what she is but of what they'll do to her when they realize.
If Rafael ever learns the truth, he won't release her.
I must evaporate before the board kills us both.
Rafael read it twice and he couldn't breathe.
She'd hidden it all from him. Project Orchid. The conception of their daughter that Amelia was more than flesh and blood, she was something evolved and she'd lied to him about it.A part of him wanted to be furious. Wanted to hate Celeste for it but another part was deep and feral—knew because if someone had told him what Amelia truly was and the price on her head?
He'd kill the world to keep her safe too.
His computer beeped again.
Live satellite feed. Drone above the Oregon coast. Thermal heat signatures confirming where the cottage Elias had gone into two nights ago.
Celeste was inside, so was Amelia.
And someone else just showed up at the cabin—unmarked vehicle, off headlights.
Rafael's gut clenched.
He zoomed in.
A man stepped out. Thin built, military stance with what looked like a biometric scanner.
Not one of his.
"s**t" Rafael whispered.
He grabbed his keys slamming out of the suite. His jet would arrive in Oregon in less than six hours but he might already be too late.
Six hours later.
Dawn was barely grazing the Oregon coastline sky when Rafael showed up, black SUV crunching to a halt a half mile from the cottage. He didn't bother waiting for backup. He slid in stealth mode, gun holstered under his coat and climbed the hill up toward the bluff.
He saw the unmarked car left behind.
The cabin lights were dark.
But inside was quiet, heavy and disrupted.
He reached the front door and stood frozen.
It was slightly open.
Then he noticed it carved into the wooden trim.
A symbol he recalled from Orchid's last report.
The Orchid Sigil.
The mark they would apply to indicate unauthorized access.Heart pounds as he pushed open the door.
"Celeste?"
No answer.
"Amelia?" Silence only.
The living room was in shambles. The AI screen was smashed. Dried blood scarred the edge of the carpet. Rafael's chest constricted as he took a step further froze rigid when he saw it.
On the table lay a black envelope.
With one data chip inside and a message.
In Celeste's handwriting.
They've kidn*pped her.
Don't trust anyone.
If you want to save our daughter, find the other half of Orchid before they do.
I never stopped loving you, Rafael but now you have a decision to make, your empire or our daughter.
The paper slipped out of his hands. His head reeled.
They've kidn*pped Amelia. Celeste has been taken and the second half of Project Orchid, the half that could save or kill them all was still out there.
The door slammed shut behind him.
Rafael spun around again, gun trained.
But there was no one there.
Only a flashing light on the wall monitors and one word flashed on the screen:
AWAKENING INITIATED.
Rafael scowled at the screen, the roar of tires up the gravel driveway behind the house gets louder.
Too late.
They'd already activated Orchid.
And this time, it was not just information. It was Amelia.
With Rafael left reeling by the truth that Amelia is not only their daughter but the very living key to a lethal top-secret project, he is thrown into a battle for survival against the clock. With Celeste gonemissing and Amelia abducted, the secrets of Project Orchid begin to unravel faster than he can follow. The encrypted chip behind him contains a secret map and one that leads to a second Orchid facility deep within the ruins of an abandoned decommissioned biotech lab in Zurich where Orchid's prototype had last been closed down after a test had failed but Rafael isn't the only one who knows.
Unaware of this, another rogue cyber-military cell has also initiated a search. Their purpose was to use Amelia's emergent neural network to resurrect the original Orchid AI, one that could weaponize emotional empathy into manipulation and mass control.
Meanwhile, Celeste awakens in an underground bunker, wrists tied and her breaths shallow as she has minutes before being taken over the border but she is not alone. A captive stranger beside her mutters a name she assumed dead "Elias, he's alive and he's running Orchid now"
As Rafael gets onto his own private jet to fly to Zurich, the final flash from the hijacked drone feed illuminates his screen:
"ORCHID PHASE II: HUMAN INTERFACE ACTIVATED"The hunt has begun and Amelia is no longer a child.
She's being rebuilt and she's waking up fast.
