The next day Holden rolled late out of his bed. The clock on his bedside table already said 2.30h pm. A groan escaped his lips. Walking into the bathroom, he saw his hung over face. Great he had work to do, before the party tonight. He really didn’t plan to get so drunk last night, but it just happened. He just drank his solitude away. Regretting his decision of last night, he hops in the shower. If he only could go back to sleep for a few more hours.
“You can’t smart ass. Aren’t you forgetting something?” Egon, his wolf, helps Holden remember.
“Damn it, the cake. I have to pick up the cake.”
“And you only have a hour of two to do so before the store closes. And the city is a good half hour drive. So chop chop. You have to hurry.”
Holden sighs on the voice in his head. Egon sometimes is just a pain in his ass. Although he wouldn’t want to live without him. As much as he nags at him, Egon is also his strength and his conscience. He is just a part of him.
Deciding to dress casually, he takes his clothes out of his closet and puts them on. He takes a hand through his still damp hair and decides this is just it. Grabbing a snack in his kitchen, Holden heads down to the garage. After putting the address in the navigation, he hits the road.
After about half an hour he parks the car in the street. Egon seems to wake up in his head.
“What has you active all of a sudden?”
“I don’t know. I feel something important is about to happen.”
“Yes, I’m about to pick up a cake and have to deliver it very carefully back to the pack.” Holden rolls his eyes to his wolf. He grabs the door and pushes it open. Egon seems to go mad inside his head.
Suddenly a scent of lilies drifts past Holden. He takes a deep breath through his nose. It definitely smells like lilies, but where is that coming from? It smells like heaven.
“MATE” Roars Egon inside Holden's head. Holden searches the whole place and then his eyes set on a female on one of the tables.
“Go talk to her!”
“Yes Egon, I will. Just be patient and let me handle this.” Egon scoffs. While looking through the café part of the building, Holden notices with delight that there isn’t another table free. This just had to be his luck. When he comes close enough, he notices something else. She is human. His steps falter for a second, but he resumes his way.
“She is our mate. She is made for us.” Egon tells him.
‘Excuse me, May I sit here? The rest is full.’ Holden looks hopeful to the lady in front of him.
‘Yes sure. Take a chair. I’ll make a little space for you.’ She starts to collect a few papers, while Holden takes a seat. A waitress comes over and gives him the menu.
‘Have you been here before?’
‘Yes, I actually have.’ The lady raises a brow.
‘What would you recommend? This is actually my first time in one of the cafés.’ She looks at him.
‘I would recommend the strawberry vanilla cake. It is as delicious as it sounds.’
‘Is it your favourite?’ Holden looks at her.
‘I love it, but I’m more of a caramel kind of person. But you seem a more fruity kind of person. Am I wrong?’
‘No you’re right. I love fruity cakes. My name is Holden.’
‘I’m Edana.’ She shakes his extended hand. Holden feels sparks coming from their connected skin. Edana feels some warm tingling. She doesn’t understand, but somehow it makes her feel at ease. Holden has ordered and the waitress sets the cake in front of him together with a cappuccino. He takes a bite and he has to keep in a moan. The cakes tasted delicious. Edana looks at Holden over her papers. His joyous face makes her smile.
‘And?’
‘You’re right. This is delicious.’ Edana smiles. Holden feels a little flame of joy inside him. He makes a note for himself that he would do everything to keep seeing that smile. Egon is close to the surface. He doesn’t want to miss anything of his mate.
“Keep her talking, i***t!” Egon's voice goes through Holden's head. They talk about a lot of things. Holden finds out that she actually lives in this city. She has come here a lot since they opened. She tasted all of the cakes and her favourite is the Caramel and vanilla mouse cake. Holden immediately takes note to taste that one the next time.
A little beep of his phone burst his little happy bubble. A simple look shows a text from his mom.
‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t keep you busy. You probably have a lot to do.’
‘No it is okay. I have a lot of fun. This was just my mom. Asking if I already picked up my sister's birthday cake.’
‘And that is why you are here, aren’t you?’
‘Yes, but as I said I had a lot of fun. Perhaps we could do it again some other time.’ Holden feels like he has to act fast, before he loses her. Edana looks at him. She thinks about what to do. He is a stranger to her, but she did have a lot of fun. Can she trust him? But how would she know, if she doesn’t give him a chance. She searches his eyes, but sees nothing but hope.
‘I guess we could,’ she exclaims carefully. The look on his face does give her a hopeful feeling from the inside. They exchange numbers and Holden promises to text her the address for the restaurant he will choose for next Wednesday. Holden takes the cake with him and hasn't felt this happy in a long time. He has found his mate and she is beautiful and kind. Her not being a wolf only means that he has to make her fall in love the old fashion way. And he is definitely up for that challenge. Then he can tell her about everything.
