chapter six: Shadows between them

506 Words
The forest was quiet, too quiet. Kael moved through the underbrush like a ghost, the cold biting at his skin. His eyes burned with something fierce, a storm raging beneath his calm exterior. He had spent months perfecting his power, and now, it was time to take the next step. Ahead, the village lay sleeping, unaware. He reached out with his mind, feeling the thoughts of the people inside their homes. Fear. Regret. Secrets buried deep beneath their smiles. He smiled. Easy to break. With a thought, he sent a ripple of dread crashing through their dreams. One by one, the villagers woke screaming. Kael stood back, watching the chaos unfold like a twisted symphony. This was only the beginning. Far away, Lior sat at his desk in his small room, the glow of his laptop illuminating his focused face. He had pieced together what little he could from public records and whispers on the web, but the deeper he dug, the more his chest tightened with unanswered questions. The article about the woman found dead in the woods was the only lead. Who was she? His mother, surely. But what about his father? And then there was the name..Kael.. echoing in his dreams, like a warning. His fingers trembled as he looked at the mark on his wrist. He wasn’t sure what he was capable of yet, but something inside him ached to protect the people he cared about, to stop the darkness he could sense creeping closer. He closed his eyes and reached out, willing the flicker of power to return. A faint pulse answered. Lior swallowed hard. He had to find answers. Before it was too late. Kael returned to his hiding place in the ruins, exhausted but alive. The power left in the village was intoxicating, but also tiring. He touched his temple and willed the faces from his mind. One name stayed, the village elder, a man with secrets hidden behind weary eyes. Kael smiled again. Everyone hides something. But his thoughts flickered. He remembered the beatings. The cold nights. The loneliness. He wasn’t just angry. He was broken. And broken things could shatter the world. Meanwhile, Lior’s dreams grew clearer. Not just fragments, but faces. Memories not his own, his mother’s voice whispering a warning, his father’s shadow watching from the edge. He awoke sweating. He knew he needed help but didn’t know who to trust. His foster mother was kind, but she didn’t know the truth. No one did. Except maybe… Kael. The brothers moved through their separate worlds, unaware that their paths would cross soon. One would seek revenge fueled by years of pain and hatred. The other, desperate to stop the cycle before it consumed them all. But when they finally met, it would not be a reunion bathed in light. It would be a battle where nothing was certain, where secrets would spill, alliances would shatter, and the darkest parts of their shared past would be revealed. Because sometimes, the closest blood hides the deepest shadows.
