Chapter 19: Recruiting at Any Cost

1113 Words
As Dr. Wilson finished speaking, Old Master Douglas tucked away the prescription, clasped his hands behind his back, and fixed the physician with a cold, steady gaze. "Wilson! How many years have you studied under me?" Dr. Wilson was taken aback, his mind momentarily confused. Why was Master Douglas suddenly asking this? Nevertheless, he answered: "Master Douglas, I've studied at the Douglas Family Pharmacy for eleven years!" "Eleven years!" Old Master Douglas stroked his beard thoughtfully. "Eleven years to become a Senior Physician, you've... managed to support yourself. Pack up your things immediately, go to the finance department, and collect your final paycheck for this month." "What?" In that moment, not only was Dr. Wilson shocked, but Amanda Douglas was equally stunned! Was Old Master Douglas actually dismissing Wilson—who had been at the pharmacy for eleven years—simply because he'd been disrespectful to Alexander Reed? Dr. Wilson bit his lip, unwilling to accept his fate. "Master Douglas, I've been dedicated to the Douglas Family Pharmacy. Surely you wouldn't dismiss me over one small mistake?" The Douglas Family Pharmacy was among the most prestigious in the country. Leaving with its credentials was equivalent to having a gold seal of approval! And Old Master Douglas was one of the most influential figures in the traditional medicine community! Wilson had been counting on him for promotion to Special Class Physician. After that, leaving the Douglas Family Pharmacy would have been like a dragon entering the sea, a tiger returning to the forest—unstoppable! Old Master Douglas drew a deep breath, his eyes showing a trace of regret. "You haven't committed any major error! But the very first lesson I taught you when you joined was to never be arrogant! Did you ever take these words to heart?" Dr. Wilson immediately responded: "I've always kept them close to my heart, Master!" "Nonsense!" Old Master Douglas thundered, his face darkening! "Faced with a priceless prescription, you treated it like garbage and offended its author. I ought to beat you senseless!" Dr. Wilson's face turned pale as he trembled. He stared at the prescription in Old Master Douglas's hand, his eyes widening in disbelief. "This... this is truly a priceless prescription?" "What? Do you think I would lie to you?" "No... I wouldn't dare!" Wilson hastily waved his hands. Seeing the serious expression in Old Master Douglas's eyes, he sighed heavily and bowed. "Master Douglas, I apologize! In the future, I will remember your great kindness and teaching!" With that, he left, utterly dejected! Amanda's face was filled with disbelief! At first, she had thought her grandfather dismissed Wilson because he'd offended Alexander Reed and feared his power. But her grandfather said it was because of this prescription! Heavens, had her grandfather gone mad? Never in her life had she seen anything like this! Even her grandfather wouldn't dare claim his own prescriptions were worth tens of millions! In the entire Douglas family, perhaps only their ancient medical texts might be considered priceless treasures! Out of curiosity, Amanda took the prescription from her grandfather's hand. After looking it over, her delicate brows furrowed tightly. "Grandpa! Isn't this just an ordinary prescription? Is it really so valuable? I don't see anything special!" Old Master Douglas shook his head, explaining with utmost seriousness: "Amanda, remember this: traditional medicine has three great realms. Beginners see things simply. Advanced practitioners see complexity. But true masters return to the ultimate simplicity! This prescription looks no different from ordinary ones because you haven't reached the level to understand it yet!" "Heavens! Grandpa! You're not joking? His martial arts are already so formidable, and now his medical skill is supernatural too? Does he even allow others to live?" Old Master Douglas smiled mysteriously. "Whether he wants others to live or not, I don't know. But I do know that he might be an opportunity for you!" "An opportunity?" Amanda was even more puzzled, tilting her head with wide, confused eyes! Old Master Douglas continued: "Didn't you want to become a martial arts master who can move mountains and control the weather? If you could befriend him, become his disciple, you would have that chance in this lifetime!" Amanda's eyes immediately brightened! "You're right! Why didn't I think of that?" Old Master Douglas rolled his eyes. "Then hurry after him! Tell him the Douglas family is willing to provide all the herbs he needs. Try to befriend him - I won't begrudge any price, no matter how high!" "Alright!" With that, Amanda rushed off! At the entrance, a beautiful figure was walking in and was nearly knocked over by Amanda's hasty exit, causing her to let out a startled cry. Old Master Douglas heard the sound and smiled: "Emily! You've arrived!" Emily Snow frowned, watching Amanda rush away like the wind. "Master Douglas, what's going on with Amanda? Why is she running so fast?" "Nothing important, just some personal matter! But tell me, why did you want to see me?" Emily smiled gently: "I haven't visited you in a while, so I wanted to check on you, Master Douglas!" Old Master Douglas rolled his eyes again. "Stop trying to fool this old man! Even Amanda, my own granddaughter, thinks of nothing but going out and having fun. She wouldn't think about an old man like me unless there was something special! Come on, what do you need? Just speak plainly." Emily's expression grew somewhat serious. "Very well! Since you're being so straightforward, I'll be direct! My company is facing serious problems. I need a powerful new product! This product must revitalize the company and allow me to regain control!" Old Master Douglas frowned. "That's quite a difficult request!" Emily quickly replied: "I know it's difficult! But besides you, Master Douglas, I truly have no other option! And don't worry, I'll absolutely ensure you're properly compensated!" Old Master Douglas waved his hand dismissively. "You misunderstand my meaning! Given my relationship with your father, I wouldn't care about a small sum of money! But the formula you're asking for is difficult to create. I'm not a miracle worker! I'm not omnipotent! I don't have a prescription that can bring a company back from the dead!" Emily's heart grew cold. Although she had vaguely anticipated this possibility, hearing Old Master Douglas's verdict firsthand was still hard to accept! "Master Douglas, is there really no solution at all?" Emily smiled bitterly, still unwilling to give up! Old Master Douglas was about to refuse again when he suddenly looked at the prescription in his hand. His eyes immediately lit up! "Wait! I just thought of someone who might be able to help!" Emily's eyes brightened. "Who is it?"
