16 After an arduous two-week march through the desert, Kamira could hardly drag her feet. Veelk set an unforgiving pace again, committing every night and most days to traveling with only a few hours of rest when the sun was highest. Kamira didn’t argue. The farther they got away from civilization, the less likely the destruction would reach it, so she endured the trek, even though every breath she took burnt as if the air itself was fire.
