Chapter 6: The Final Bite

639 Words
Theo and Brutus stood before a long, golden banquet table that stretched endlessly in both directions. The plates before them shimmered, refilling themselves the moment a bite was taken. The air smelled of roasted meats, fresh bread, and the kind of stew that made old monks meditate for twenty years. But something was different. Theo could feel it in his gut—not hunger, but something else. “Brutus, I think this is more than just a feast,” he said. Brutus, mid-bite into a massive honey-glazed ham, gave him a questioning look. Then, the voice returned. “You have proven your hunger. Now, prove your control.” The room rumbled. The golden plates rose into the air, spinning wildly before slamming back onto the table. The food began to glow. Theo grabbed a turkey leg, but the moment he touched it, his strength surged—his muscles tensed, his vision sharpened. It wasn’t just food anymore. It was power. Brutus took another bite of honey, and his claws sparked with golden energy. He looked down at his paws in shock. Theo grinned. “Okay, I definitely like this feast.” The Guardians of the Feast Suddenly, from behind the banquet table, three towering figures emerged. They were clad in armor made of shimmering silver, their faces hidden beneath golden helmets shaped like lion heads. Each one carried a massive golden fork and knife. “Only those who master their hunger may pass.” Theo cracked his knuckles. “So, what? We gotta eat faster than you guys?” The middle guardian shook his head. “No. You must learn when not to eat.” Theo blinked. “...Wait, what?” For the first time in his life, he was being told not to eat. Brutus looked equally confused. Then, the test began. The Trial of Self-Control The banquet table came to life. The food itself became a temptation, whispering in Theo’s ear. “Just one more bite…” “You’re still a little hungry, aren’t you?” “Imagine how much stronger you’ll be if you keep eating…” Theo wanted to eat more. He felt the hunger in his bones. But something in his gut told him this was the real challenge—knowing when enough was enough. Brutus sat frozen, staring at a glowing salmon. His bear instincts told him to eat, but he looked to Theo for guidance. Theo took a deep breath. Then, for the first time in his life… He put down his fork. The moment he did, the room exploded with golden light. The whispers vanished. The food stopped glowing. The lead guardian nodded. “You have passed.” Theo wiped his mouth. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I still could eat more.” The guardian chuckled. “And that is why you are worthy.” The True Reward The temple rumbled one last time as a massive door opened at the far end of the hall. Inside was something Theo hadn’t expected— A single, perfect meal. It wasn’t the biggest feast he had seen. It wasn’t glowing or floating or magical-looking. But it was something more. It was the greatest meal ever prepared, made by the first chefs of legend—those who had once believed that food was not just about strength, but about joy. Theo and Brutus sat down together and took their first bites. And for the first time ever, Theo didn’t eat fast. He savored every bite. Because in that moment, he understood— Hunger wasn’t just about eating. It was about appreciating every meal, every bite, and every journey it took to get there. And so, Theo and Brutus didn’t just leave the Banquet of the Ancients as champions. They left as legends. The End…? Or at least, until Theo got hungry again.
