Emma: “Tell me, Emma. What’s next?” My thoughts paused as Alex held his car door open for me. The moment the door closed, I exhaled and took a moment to breathe while he walked around the car, but when he got in with that expected look on his face, I knew that I didn’t have the answer. “I don’t know,” I answered honestly, leaving out the bit about how terrified I felt about what came next, about the uncertainty of it all. “What do you want to happen next?” He asked, starting the car, the seat warming beneath me making me want to hunker into the warmth and savor the first human thing I had felt since all this started.
