The house had finally gone quiet after they left for their packs, but somehow the silence irritated me even more than their presence had. I sat behind the large mahogany desk with several unfinished reports spread open before me, yet I had reread the same paragraph three times without absorbing a single word. My mind refused to stay where it belonged. On work, on territory disputes, on border inspections. On literally anything except Mirellie.
