Episode 3 - Zephyr's Uncle

855 Words
Everyone in the entire room was shocked by what had just happened. The shock took different forms on different people in the room. For most of the Everly family, it was cautious satisfaction. They were worried for their patriarch but were happy with the physical and verbal mark of shaming he had done to the patriarch of the Monroe family. Jaxon Everly was on edge and ready to take on anyone from Monroe if they tried to retaliate against his grandfather. The Monroe family was also facing different levels of disgust and anger at the audacity of this lower-class merchant to secrete his bodily fluids on the face of one of their own. Well, all of them, except one person. Thaddeus Monroe had been a product of Zephyr’s grandfather forcing himself on an assistant to his son. The girl had been the daughter of the Mayor of Roldam, the city where Monroe had their stronghold, and had only been working under Monroe for experience before she moved on to better places. Monroe couldn’t afford to anger the Mayor, so they couldn’t even kill her and make her out as just another case of disappearance. After all, her safety was their responsibility. In general, the Monroes were the type of people who were merciless to the weak and cowered in front of the powerful. Since the girl refused to get an abortion for fear of future complications, she gave birth to the child. She also didn’t want anything to do with this child, so she gave it to Monroe to be raised. Out of fear of the Mayor, they had never laid a finger on the child. However, just because physical torture wasn’t a thing didn’t mean mental one couldn’t be done. They put Thaddeus to work as a slave. They did send him to school, but it was to keep appearances and ensure that they had more alibi in case someone accused them of mistreatment. After all, why would they send someone they were abusing to school? Theddeus knew what proper parental love looked like; he had seen Monroe give it to Zephyr. But even so, he had never received it, despite being only two years older than Zephyr. At the tender age of 18, Theddeus ran away from Monroe, knowing that the police would not be able to force him to go back to his “family” if he didn’t want to go back. However, he had mysteriously come back to the Monroe Mansion half a year ago, seeking shelter in exchange for working as their servant. Monroe had laughed at this turn of events and happily gave him a small room. Why would they refuse the services of an extra servant who works for free, when they barely had any more left to serve their family? It was here that Theddeus saw Juniper and fell deeply in love with her. If you asked him what about Juniper inspired this emotion in him, he wouldn’t be able to tell you. All he knew was that he would happily annihilate anything that would dare to bring even slight unhappiness to her. He wanted her to be his, as much as he was hers. Unfortunately, the circumstances were such that he could only look at her from afar. Sometimes, when watching her smiling and talking to Zephyr became too much for him to take, he would interrupt them with one thing or another. The temporary attention he received from her during these was enough to make him happy for the rest of the week. Thaddeus lived for her visits, counting the days till she came back for a visit to the Monroe Mansion, but he also hated those visits because he knew the exact kind of person Zephyr was. No one in the entire main hall was as happy as Thaddeus when Grandpa Everly decided to break off the engagement between Juniper and Zephyr. His happiness increased many folds more when he saw Grandpa spit on the face of his half-brother. He had never even thought he would see something like that happen to a Monroe who had been at the forefront of making his early life hell. After the Everly family left the Monroe mansion, the Monroes glared at the servants in the main hall, silently warning them to not dare gossip about anything that happened there on that day. Soon after that, they also left to go discuss what to do next in the private office where no one else was allowed, and it was almost impossible to spy. Thaddeus didn’t care about trying to spy on them over there either. He knew exactly and all that the Monroe family was capable of at this point. Which is still a lot of things. There was no way Thaddeus would let anything happen to Juniper or her family because of deciding against marrying into the Monroe family. Going to a quiet corner he knew was not monitored, he sent a message to someone. He needed to make an introduction to his beloved, not as the servant of the Monroe household, but as Thaddeus Wilder.
