The night air was thick with silence. Not the kind that comforted—but the kind that watched.
Jade walked back to the dormitory in measured steps, his hands perfectly still at his sides. No doll ever hurried. No doll ever hesitated. No doll ever thought.
But Jade was thinking.
His mind raced with a single thought, one that clawed at his insides, demanding to be heard.
I can’t do this anymore.
Eliz had pushed him too far. Every touch, every whisper, every time she looked at him like he was something to study rather than someone to know—it had poisoned him.
He had been afraid of discovery. Afraid of punishment. Afraid of feeling.
But now, he wasn’t afraid anymore.
He was angry.

The Gathering
Mina watched as Jade slipped through the dormitory doors. His face was blank—just like always.
But his hands…
They were shaking.
She waited until the guards passed through the halls before she made her move. Three knocks. Pause. One knock.
A signal. A test.
Jade hesitated for only a second before he answered. One knock back.
Mina exhaled.
He was still in there.
She slipped inside, closing the door behind her. Rai was already there, his sharp eyes cutting through the dim light.
“You’re different,” Rai said, voice low. “What happened?”
Jade sat on the edge of his cot, head bowed. He wasn’t sure how to explain it.
How do you put into words the feeling of realizing you are someone else’s possession?
How do you say out loud that the person who owns you… wants to break you just to see if she can?
He clenched his fists.
“I’m done.”
Mina stiffened. “What do you mean?”
Jade lifted his gaze. “I mean I won’t be Eliz’s toy anymore. I mean we need to get out.”
Silence.
Mina looked at Rai. Rai looked at Jade.
Then, Rai let out a low breath. “You do realize what happens when dolls try to run, don’t you?”
Jade’s stomach twisted.
He did.
He had seen the bodies.
But he didn’t care anymore.
“If we don’t try, we’ll die here anyway.” His voice was quiet, but steady. “One way or another.”
Mina reached for his hand, gripping it tightly. “Then let’s make sure we try.”
Jade looked between them—Mina’s unwavering resolve, Rai’s careful calculation.
This was it.
The spark that would start the fire.

A Shadow in the Hallway
But they weren’t alone.
Beyond the door, in the dim glow of the hallway light—someone was listening.
A figure, pressed against the wall, breath slow and careful.
A pair of brown eyes wide with curiosity.
Eliz.
And she was smiling.
