Olivia’s POV
I could hear my aunt hum to herself quietly, with a smile on her face as she was making us milkshake.
Her smile widened as soon as she saw me. "Perfect timing honey. Grab those glasses for me please." She said softly pointing at a cabinet.
I didn't move a centimetre.
"What's the matter?" She asked as she saw my blank face. "Everything alright ?"
I slowly placed the photos and the letter down on the kitchen counter top waiting for her reaction. In a flash, i saw her face changing from happy to horrified. All the colour drained from her face and she stiffened.
The jar of milkshake fell down with a loud crashing sound breaking the sudden tense silence. My aunt looked at the photos as if poltergeists were going to jump out of it and attack her at any moment.
"Where did you get these from?" She stammered in terror.
"What's going on here?" I heard my uncle coming from behind.
He saw the stained floor and shook his head at my aunt. "You should be more careful." He said and started to pick up the jar.
"What's the matter?" He asked in confusion as he looked at our faces, finally realising that something was very wrong.
Speechless, my aunt pointed her trembling finger to the letter and the photos.
He followed her finger and a dark expression took over his face.
"Where did you find these?" He hissed.
"That's not important." I gritted. "You said my parents passed away in a house fire so why does this letter imply something different?!"
"Ollie lo-"
"NO." I screamed angrily. "Don't you dare spin another lie. All you two did was lie to me my whole life. You hid things about my parents. Tell me the truth. NOW!"
"Olivia calm down. Yelling is going to get us nowhere." Uncle said calmly
"You can't tell me to f*****g calm down after keeping secrets from me! They were MY PARENTS! Don't you think i deserve to know the f*****g TRUTH?!"
Uncle snatched the photos and letter and led me to the living room, aunt followed us behind quietly.
"Take a seat Olivia." He said sternly.
I glared at him and plopped down. Both of them sat opposite from me. My aunt fiddled with her fingers, keeping her head down.
"Can anyone f*****g talk?!" I almost screamed again.
"If you have read the letter Olivia, your mother clearly didn't want you to know what happened thirteen years ago. There's a reason we didn't tell you anything. We are just following what your parents wanted that's all." He said calmly.
Listening to his reply, my blood boiled even more.
"Look, I'm not an eight year old little girl anymore. Don't you think i deserve to know what happened to my parents?! Do you expect me to live the rest of my life always wondering what my past was?! I don't care what my parents told you. They are dead, do you understand?! f*****g DEAD! And now i know they didn't die in an accident. Someone killed them right? Why would someone do that? What the f**k are you hiding?!"
"Ollie..." finally my aunt spoke.
"My nightmares...they weren't just random nonsense that i keep seeing every f*****g night for last few years. I have to see my mother dying over and over again every time i sleep. I was there when everything happened, wasn't i?!"
Her eyes widened. I could see guilt shining in her teary eyes. It was not my intention to hurt anyone but i was going to get the truth one way or another.
"Tell me the truth or i will find it myself one way or another." I demanded.
"I promised Lily to never reveal anything to you. I can't do that Ollie I'm sorry."
"You are sorry?!" I sneered. "Damn right you should be f*****g sorry for keeping me in dark all these years. I can't force you to do anything. I'm leaving tomorrow morning. I'll look for answers myself. I don't think I'll come back here again. I maybe a forgiving person aunt Cathy, but I'm not going to be forgetting any of this."
With that, i got up and left to my room. I locked the door behind me and fell in bed.
Tears gathered in my eyes. Why did someone hate my parents so much that they had to murder them?! What happened thirteen years ago?! How am I going to find the truth?!
In a flash, my life went from normal to a mystery. I never thought i would be ever stuck in such situation.
A soft knock on the door resonated through the room.
"I don't want to talk right now. I will see you in morning. Please leave me alone," i said in a stammering voice.
I knew it was my aunt because i heard sniffling outside too.
"I need to tell you Ollie. Open the door."
I sighed and dragged myself out of the bed to the door. I opened it silently and let her in.
We both sat on the bed not knowing what to say. The tension and anger was thick in the air. After a minute or so passed in silence, i looked at her.
"Are you going to say something?" I asked sounding desperate. Honestly i was coming quickly at the end of the rope, boiling in my own rage and disbelief. It all felt more terrifying than a nightmare. Getting muddied or hunted by the monsters in my dream was way better than getting to know that my whole f*****g life was a big fat lie. The mere thought of my parents getting murdered was haunting to me.
I looked at my aunt with angry watery eyes, waiting for her to dump the truth on me.
She looked at me with glossy eyes. "Although i promised my sister not to say anything, i know you deserve to know what happened thirteen years ago."
She looked at the window, her eyes shedding a single tear as she began to speak.
