"Where is this town?" I asked.
"About a forty minutes drive from our old home." He answered.
"This is too sudden all of this. And there's also something i have to tell you guys." I said.
They looked at me in confusion.
"I'm going to look for the killer." I announced.
"What the hell are you talking about girl?!" My uncle lost his cool.
"Olivia, you can't do this. This is absurd and dangerous. It's been years since that incident. Finding that person now is going to be next to impossible." My aunt panicked.
"I can't just let whoever that is roam around freely without a care and get away with double homicide."
"You think we don't look? We looked for months Olivia! For months! We found nothing just a bunch of dead leads. The killer was too smart. Going after him now is not going to get you anywhere."
I snickered. "Then you didn't look deep enough. I am not asking for permission, I'm telling you! I can't sit back and watch. I need to find this person no matter what and no one can stop me."
"Ollie don't do this." My aunt cried.
I looked at her and calmed down a bit. I took a seat next to her and took her hands in mine. "I know it's going to be dangerous and complicated but i have to at least try. For my own peace."
She cried more.
"Eventually you will understand why I'm doing this. And maybe my staying here is not a good idea at the moment. I'll give you guys some space and i need some space too. I don't know how I'm going to do this but I'll figure something out."
"You don't know what you are getting yourself into!" My uncle said angrily and left. Without a word, i left the dining room too and packed my bags. I needed to leave now if i wanted to reached my old house in time.
The place that we used to live in is about about three hours drive from here. If i left now i would reach there by noon.
I said my goodbyes to the couple. Obviously they were not too gap about my decision but at this point,i wasn't going to back out. I had the package that uncle gave me. I don't know how much money was in the bank accounts,i needed to see that too.
The drive was sullen and most of the time i was lost in thoughts. I passed our old town and reached the destination in next fifty minutes. It was a small town with a nice community. I saw a few people going about their business. I parked near an old looking diner and decided to have my lunch. I also needed to ask around about the house to the locals.
The bell dinged as i entered inside. The diner was small get cozy. It gad a checkered floor and yellow walls. Few people drank beer while others ate. I took a seat and a smiling waitress approached me.
"What would you like to order today ma'am?"
I looked at the menu and decided with classic cheeseburger, fries and a chocolate shake.
The waitress noted my order and strutted away with menu in her hands.
I didn't realise i was starving until i took the first bite. I didn't have breakfast and didn't eat anything on eve way either so my stomach growled in satisfaction.
After a nice meal, i walked to cashier to pay for my meal. Am old man was sitting behind the counter counting bills.
"The total is 15.89$" he said.
I handed the cash.
"Um excuse me. I need to ask you something." I said to him.
He looked up from his counting.
"Are you a local?" I asked.
"Spent forty five years here." He answered.
"Oh wonderful. Then perhaps you would know about the house-fire that occurred thirteen years ago. A couple was killed in it." I said.
His face instantly tensed up.
"Why are you asking about that? Who are you?" He hissed.
I was taken aback by the hostility.
"I'm actually Olivia Martin, their daughter."
His eyes widened and a few heads turned towards me.
"Eh did i say something wrong?"
"I don't know what you want child but that was no house fire. Someone murdered your parents and burned them. That incident still haunts the townspeople to this day. No one dares to go near that place."
I sighed. "I know someone killed them and that's why I'm here. I need to know the truth. Can you please give me the directions to the house."
"I personally don't advise you to go into that godforsaken place. But since you are here I'll tell you." He said. "Take a right from here and you'll enter residential area. From there take second left and another right. You'll find the house on the right side. It's the thirteenth house. Can't miss it."
"Thank you." I said gratefully.
I followed the old man's directions as reached to the house just as he has said. It was burned down and looking like a horror movie set up. The grass on the front lawn was overgrown and the fence was broken in numerous places. There was graffiti on the burnt wood. Although there was a no trespassing sign it didn't keep the people out.
I made a path to the front door which was open. It creaked loudly as i pushed it. Weeds were growing inside and there as no second floor. The floor and the roof was caving in.
I could see the yellow police tapes where stairs were. Apart from few scattered things, there was nothing into the living room. I don't know what i was looking for exactly but i looked at every corner carefully. All the fire resistant things that didn't get burned down were lying around. U walked into the kitchen and got emotional just by thinking how beautiful the house must have been when my mother was alive.
Although I didn't know my parents i still felt a sense of belonging in this rubble.
As i was walking to the bedroom the floor caved in and i sunk down with it, scraping my leg in the process.
I hissed in pain and tried to get out. After i did so, i wiped the blood away with my hands and got a bottle of water from the car to clean the wound. I wrapped a bandaid around the cut and went back in. When i fell i touched something solid so i had to go back.
Surely enough, there was another metal box under the floorboard.
"Ahan." I said proudly.
I fished out the box from the hole and looked at the rusted metal lock. It took me almost twenty hits and a big ass rock to open it.
