Olivia’s POV
“I heard that she came from a really wealthy family. Like filthy rich and loaded with money till their heads.” Seth said looking at Angelina Romano.
“She’s a transfer student isn’t she?” Mila pondered.
“Yep. Came outta nowhere and took whole f*****g college by storm.” Emily waved her spoon in Mila’s direction.
“I’m going to get lunch.” I said and hurried to the lunch line where Angelina stood two people forward.
She was conversing on a phone in Italian which went totally over the head. Sucks to be monolingual.
I didn’t understand what she said to the person on the other side but I could sense frustration in her voice.
She abruptly cut the call and rolled her eyes, stuffing her phone into her jeans angrily.
“You okay?” Lilith Anderson asked.
“No lily I’m not okay. My stupid brother is up my ass again.” Angelina raged.
“If it bothers you so much just don’t pick up his call.” Henrietta Johnson shrugged.
“And have his minions corner me? No thanks.”
“Then I guess just deal with it.” Lilith laughed.
“Not funny Lily. He suffocates me.”
“I’m sure he is just making sure everything is good for you.”
“Yeah whatever. Let’s just eat and get the hell out of here.”
No one knew about Angelina’s family. We all just knew that she came from a really rich background and that her family was back in Italy.
I learned that she had a brother and maybe he was in the states but I don’t know. I just came to know about his existence.
I took my lunch and went back to the table and joined the usual bickering. I slowly thought of all the possibilities and chances of getting close to Angelina without looking sus. I know that my friends were going to grill me for doing this but I was playing a long game.
“So vacations…are we on for the trip?” Emily asked excitedly.
“Ollie isn’t coming.” Phil said and everyone turned to me.
“And why the f**k not?” Em asked, narrowing her eyes at me.
“I have to go back to my aunt’s. They are kind of the only family I have and I don’t get to see them a lot in the whole year.” I lied, looking sorry.
“It’s just two weeks Ollie. You will have one and a half month.”
“I already promised guys. I’m sorry.”
“God you are no fun.” Mila grumbled.
“Don’t let me stop you. You guys have fun. I’ll be there on next road trip.”
“It’s not fun if everyone’s not there.” Paige said. “Plus we hardly ever go anywhere together apart from that same old café.”
“I know babe but I really can’t.”
In my mind I was feeling really guilty for letting my friends down.
“No worries. I’m sure you have a good reason. We will go next time.” Seth said backing me a little.
I smiled at him for understanding.
This quickly became my college routine for the exams. Observe Angelina, study and revise, write exams and have lunch with my friends.
As exams came close to the end, everyone started to prepare for the upcoming road trip. Our group-chat was filled with travel checklists and itinerary. Somewhere I felt left out and alone but girls would try to persuade me from time to time. But as much as I wanted to go, I knew I had to sacrifice this one.
The final paper finally came around and we literally felt like a huge weight was lifted from us.
“No lunch today.” mila said. “I wanna go home and sleep for like a week.”
“b***h you are coming shopping with me like yesterday. And no excuses.” Paige said, yanking mila.
“Can’t wet do it tomorrow?!” She mumbled, rubbing her eyes. “I’m f*****g tired.”
“No can do. Tomorrow we gotta pack up and do grocery runs.”
“Ugh fine. But let’s hurry okay? I wanna sleep.”
“I’ll catch you guys tomorrow.” Paige said and dragged mila with her.
“Are you sure you can’t come? I feel like you are not telling us the real reason you are not coming.” Emily said coming from behind, catching me off guard.
“You scared me stupid. And no I’m not lying. Imma sit out of this one. And I’m fine, you guys have fun and send me a tonne of pictures.”
She exhaled in defeat. “Whatever you say cupcake. I gotta roll now, got lots of packing to do.”
“Alright, I’ll see you later then.”
I said goodbye to everyone and drove back to my apartment. Freshened up and started to plan.
I was going to observe everything that Angelina does and soon I would infiltrate her life. I had two months in my hand to at least get a solid lead and jump start my investigation.
My phone rang in my bag as I was waiting for the water to boil for my ramen. It was one of those days where I didn’t feel like cooking and just felt drained of my energy.
I was still super mad at my aunt and uncle and I felt like ignoring this call too. But again my wish, I picked it up.
“Ollie.” I hear her small voice. Trembling and timid.
I felt like a massive asshole.
“I know you are still mad at us but please don’t end contact with us. You are our only child.” Her voice cracked.
I sighed. “I’m not ending contract. I just need time to accept everything. I’ll eventually come around. But I also don’t want to argue with it regarding my decision you know. I deserve answers and if you don’t have them, I’m going to find them myself and not going to stop until I get them no matter what!”
She sighed. “You have no idea what path you are choosing Olivia. There’s a reason your parents didn’t want you to know about their life, their secrets. It was their last wish to shelter you from the bloody past.”
“I don’t care. My parents are f*****g dead! You understand?! DEAD. And what kind of child am I to not even know that they were killed. If anything, I’m entitled to the truth more than anyone else in this universe!”
“I know you are stubborn just like your father and one day that is going to cost you dearly but for now all I can say is please think this all once and be very careful. If you poke the demons from the past, they are going to come attacking you.”
“All this cryptic talk is not helping you know. I don’t care what lies ahead, I’m going to get to the root of this. And all I want is your support. You don’t have to help, just support me okay? I need to do this.”
“Whatever you say darling. Please don’t be mad anymore.”
“I need more time. I’ll call you later, I’m tired.”
“Alright. You take care of yourself.”
“You guys take care too. Bye.”
