Chapter One: Broken Hearts and Bonds

1100 Words
The morning sun cast a golden glow over the lush plains of Torah. The air was thick with the promise of spring, carrying the fragrance of blooming flowers and the songs of awakening birds. In the bustling settlement of Eryndor, children ran through the streets, their laughter bouncing off the stone walls of the small village. Among them, Thora and Crystal walked side by side, their bond as inseparable as sisters. Crystal, with her white hair cascading down her back and her diamond-blue eyes sparkling with mischief, was the embodiment of beauty and charm. She exuded confidence, her strides purposeful and her head always held high. Thora, in contrast, had an understated grace. Her black hair was tied neatly into a braid, and her dark eyes observed the world with quiet curiosity. She was the grounding force to Crystal’s spirited nature, always keeping her friend balanced. At twelve years old, they had grown closer than ever since the day they’d discovered their powers. Despite their different paths—Thora as the first hybrid in Torah’s history and Crystal as the first born creator—their friendship was a haven of mutual understanding. This morning, however, Crystal was unusually quiet, her usual chatter replaced with dreamy sighs. "Are you even listening to me?" Thora nudged her friend gently. Crystal blinked, a faint blush rising to her cheeks. "Sorry, what did you say?" Thora rolled her eyes but smiled. "You've been like this for weeks now. Spit it out—what's on your mind?" Crystal hesitated, biting her lip before finally confessing, "It’s Ryker." Thora groaned. "Of course it’s Ryker. Who else?" Ryker was a member of the Forest sect, one of the fiercest warrior groups in Torah. He was tall for his age, with wild chestnut hair and piercing green eyes that seemed to see straight into your soul. Though he was only thirteen, he already had the bearing of a seasoned fighter, his movements precise and deliberate. Crystal sighed wistfully. "He's just... perfect, Thora. The way he trains, the way he speaks—he’s so focused, so driven. It’s like he belongs to another world." Thora raised an eyebrow. "You mean the world of people who don’t notice you because they’re too busy swinging swords?" Crystal scowled, but there was no real heat behind it. "He notices me. We talk sometimes, you know." Thora smirked. "Oh, I know. I also know that you turn into a stammering mess every time he looks your way." Crystal threw a handful of grass at her friend, laughing despite herself. "Shut up, Thora!" Their laughter echoed across the field, but as the weeks passed, Crystal’s infatuation with Ryker only grew. She found excuses to watch him train, her cheeks burning whenever he glanced in her direction. To Thora’s amusement—and slight exasperation—Crystal seemed determined to win his affection, no matter how oblivious he was. --- One sunny afternoon, Crystal and Thora sat under the shade of an ancient oak tree near the training grounds. Ryker was practicing with a group of older boys, his movements fluid and powerful as he wielded a wooden sword. "See what I mean?" Crystal whispered, her eyes glued to him. "He’s amazing." Thora shrugged. "He’s okay, I guess. A bit full of himself, though." Crystal shot her a glare. "You don’t understand. He’s dedicated to his craft. That’s what makes him so... admirable." Thora sighed. "Crystal, I just don’t want you to get hurt. He’s not exactly the type to notice anything outside of his training." Crystal waved her off. "You worry too much." Crystal and Ryker relationship as friends was growing stronger every day yes he was a year older but whatever age is just a number. On the days considered to be free Ryker would come and pick Crystal up from home and take her for picnics with his friends while on days when they were at school they would sit together at lunch and breakfast. the year was running but they never noticed they were so infatuated in each other so young yet their feelings may have been a bit more mature. But all good things come to an end and all of a sudden crystals world turned upside down and Thora’s words proved prophetic. --- One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky turned shades of orange and purple, Crystal came running to Thora’s home. Her face was streaked with tears, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "Crystal?" Thora rushed to her, pulling her friend into a tight embrace. "What happened?" Crystal sniffled, her voice barely above a whisper. "He... he told me I was a distraction." Thora’s eyes widened. "What?" "He said he needs to focus on his training, that he can’t afford to let anything—or anyone—get in the way." Crystal’s voice broke, and fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. "I thought we were getting closer, Thora. I thought he liked me." Thora’s heart ached for her friend. She guided Crystal to sit on the edge of her bed, holding her hands tightly. "Crystal, listen to me. This isn’t about you. Ryker is... well, he’s Ryker. He’s obsessed with being the best, and he doesn’t see what’s right in front of him." Crystal shook her head, her tears falling onto her lap. "But I wanted him to see me. I wanted to matter to him." Thora cupped her friend’s face, forcing Crystal to meet her gaze. "You do matter—to me, to your family, to everyone who loves you. You’re smart, and brave, and kind. If Ryker can’t see that, then he’s the fool, not you." Crystal let out a choked laugh. "You always know what to say." "That’s because I’m the smart one in this friendship," Thora teased, her smile softening. Crystal wiped her eyes, managing a small smile of her own. "I don’t deserve you, Thora." "Nonsense," Thora said firmly. "We deserve each other. And if Ryker doesn’t realize what he’s missing, that’s his loss." For the first time that evening, Crystal laughed—a genuine, heartfelt sound that made Thora’s chest swell with relief. --- As the days turned into weeks, Crystal slowly began to heal. Thora stayed by her side, cracking jokes and distracting her with adventures through the forests and streams near their village. Together, they faced each day with renewed determination, their bond growing even stronger in the wake of Crystal’s heartbreak. And though Crystal still carried a lingering sadness, she knew one thing for certain: with Thora by her side, she could weather any storm.
