Chapter 10: Secrets Beneath the Surface

1089 Words
The maze, once a sanctuary of joy and passion, now felt like a place where shadows gathered. Crystal had begun to notice the small cracks in her world with Renol. He was still there, still hers, but something about him had changed. He wasn’t as present as before. When they were together, his focus seemed split, his mind elsewhere. And then there were the boys—groups of them who would glare or exchange knowing looks with him from a distance. It always ended the same way: Renol would excuse himself, offer a vague apology, and disappear. --- Crystal and Thora Reconnect Crystal found herself leaning more and more on Thora. It was strange, after everything, how easily they’d slipped back into their old rhythm. The shared laughter, the teasing banter, and Thora’s unwavering honesty were comforting. One late afternoon, as the twin suns began their descent, Crystal and Thora lounged in the garden, sipping on chilled fruit juice. “You’ve been quiet,” Thora said, nudging Crystal with her elbow. Crystal hesitated before sighing. “It’s Renol. He’s been... distant.” Thora frowned. “Distant how?” Crystal waved a hand vaguely. “He’s around, but he’s not really there. He’s always distracted. And then there are these boys who seem to show up whenever we’re together. They give him a look, and he just... leaves.” Thora sat up straighter, her expression serious. “That doesn’t sound right. Have you asked him about it?” Crystal shook her head. “I don’t want to seem paranoid. And when I do hint at it, he just says it’s training or something to do with the Forest Sect.” Thora’s brow furrowed. “Training? That doesn’t make sense. Kaelen’s training isn’t that demanding.” “Exactly!” Crystal exclaimed. “It’s like he’s hiding something.” Thora placed a comforting hand on Crystal’s arm. “You need to talk to him, Crys. And if he won’t give you a straight answer, maybe it’s time to reevaluate things.” Crystal nodded, though her heart ached at the thought. --- The Glances and the Departures The pattern continued. Renol would show up late to their meetings, looking tired but still flashing her that charming smirk. He’d make some excuse, kiss her hand, and act like nothing was wrong. But the boys—the ones who seemed to be following him—were always there. Crystal began to recognize their faces: tall, muscular, and always clad in the dark greens and browns of the Forest Sect. Their presence was unnerving, and the way they looked at her, almost dismissively, didn’t help. One evening, as she sat in the maze waiting for Renol, she spotted them again. They stood at the edge of the clearing, watching silently. Renol approached them, his posture tense, and after a brief exchange, they left. When he finally came to her, his usual swagger was missing. “Sorry I’m late,” he said, avoiding her gaze. Crystal stared at him, her frustration bubbling over. “Who are they, Renol? And why do they always seem to need you when we’re together?” He hesitated, his jaw tightening. “It’s nothing. Just... Sect stuff.” “That’s not an answer,” she pressed. Renol sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s complicated, Crystal. You wouldn’t understand.” Crystal’s heart sank. She hated the distance growing between them, but she didn’t know how to bridge the gap. --- Moments of Apology For every moment of distance, there was a moment of tenderness. Renol had a way of apologizing that made it hard for Crystal to stay mad. One night, he showed up at her window, his usual smirk replaced by a look of genuine remorse. “I’ve been a bad boyfriend,” he admitted, climbing inside. Crystal raised an eyebrow. “You think?” Renol chuckled softly, sitting on the edge of her bed. “I’m sorry, princess. I’ve been distracted, but I swear it’s not because of you.” Crystal crossed her arms, skeptical. “Then what is it?” He hesitated, looking down at his hands. “I can’t tell you. Not yet.” “Not good enough,” she said, her voice trembling. “If you want me to trust you, you have to trust me.” Renol looked up, his eyes full of emotion. “I do trust you, Crystal. More than anyone. But this... it’s not something I can share. Not now.” Crystal wanted to be angry, to demand answers, but the vulnerability in his eyes stopped her. --- Crystal Takes the Initiative Determined to get to the bottom of things, Crystal began to observe Renol more closely. She watched for patterns, for any clues that might explain his behavior. One afternoon, she followed him discreetly after school, keeping to the shadows as he met with the same group of boys. Their conversation was too far away for her to hear, but their body language was tense. When Renol turned and spotted her, his expression shifted from surprise to frustration. “Crystal, what are you doing here?” “I could ask you the same thing,” she shot back. Renol sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I told you, it’s Sect business. You’re not supposed to be involved.” “I’m already involved, Renol,” she said, her voice shaking. “I’m your girlfriend, or did you forget?” His eyes softened, and he stepped closer, cupping her face in his hands. “I haven’t forgotten. I could never forget. Just... trust me, okay?” Crystal wanted to push for more, but something in his voice made her stop. She nodded reluctantly, though her doubts remained. --- The Breaking Point As the weeks went on, Renol’s behavior became more erratic. He was more distant than ever, and the tension between them was palpable. One evening, after he left abruptly yet again, Crystal broke down in tears. Thora found her in the garden, her shoulders shaking with sobs. “Crys, what’s wrong?” Thora asked, pulling her into a hug. Crystal clung to her, her words tumbling out in a rush. “I don’t know what’s happening, Thora. He’s pulling away, and I don’t know why. I’m scared I’m losing him.” Thora held her tightly, her voice firm. “You deserve someone who’s fully present, Crystal. Don’t settle for less.” Crystal nodded, though her heart felt heavy. She knew Thora was right, but letting go felt impossible. ---
