Artemis froze as the little girl’s words sunk in. “My dad said I should tell you that... you’ll have to run. The Luna has ordered for you to be killed. They think... they think you’ve used sorcery on the Alpha. They say your death will break the curse.” Disbelief hit her like a blow to the chest. She fell to her knees, gripping the edge of the doorway for balance. “No,” she whispered, shaking her head. “That’s not true. I don’t even know how to use sorcery. My grandmother forbade it—she wouldn’t even let me learn.” Her voice cracked, desperate to make the girl understand. The young girl shuffled her feet, eyes wide and full of pity. “I’m sorry, Artie. I have to go now,” she whispered before running off into the night. Artemis stared after her, the girl’s words reverberating in her mind.
